The shaky, dodgy-looking footage suddenly flashes on from a black screen, showing the larger, more-sane member of the now-former Twin City Champions. A little sharper-dressed than usual, he looks ahead and the camera catches a flattering shot of boogers and nose hairs, it's soon apparent that he's filming from his iPhone’s inner camera.
“I’m, uhh…”
He begins to speak in a raspy voice, before coughing and clearing his throat.
“Sorry about that. I'm just checking in while I'm on a bus, headed for a nice little restaurant down town… Meeting my girlfriend for a fancy Valentine’s dinner, hence the suit.”
He turns his attention to the camera for a second, the bus engine’s gentle hum clearly audible.
“I was a little bored, so I thought I'd take the time to make this little video for you guys, let you know what's going on.”
He looks straight forward again, presumably out the front or side at the traffic travelling alongside the bus. His eyes dart towards the floor suddenly -- something’s obviously troubling him.
“I recently said out a tweet, stating that I'd be taking time off… But, I didn't actually explain why I needed time away from the ring…”
He shoots the camera a look that shows trepidation and anxiety; as soon as he looks to the camera, he looks away -- just as he would break eye contact at this particular point of a face-to-face conversation. There's an unexplained pain in there, an unwillingness to allow anyone to see that deep down inside, he may just be broken.
“Lately, I've been having headaches. Disorientation… Eye troubles; the kind with double vision, irritation…”
He coughs into his hand, attempting to clear his throat a little better.
“Sorry about that, pardon me. I know what a lot of you are probably thinking right now -- ‘Oh, concussion!’. And yeah, I was right there with you, thinking the same thing myself.
But, something else was a miss… My sinuses. I've had burning feelings, trouble breathing through my nose… Earaches that come and go -- no infections, no ear wax…”
A hard swallow displays the distress in his face -- his shoulders slouch slightly, he takes a deep breath, trying to relieve the stress and calm down a little.
With teared-up eyes -- and, most likely a bus full of passengers fixated on him -- he continues to deliver his news.
“Doctors seem to think… They speculate that--”
It's like the words are getting lost.
“I may have a brain tumour. It's not a sure thing -- and I won't know for sure until I have tests done for it -- but all the symptoms I've been showing indicate toward a brain tumour.
As you can probably already tell, I'm scared to death. I lost a dear friend of mine late last year to cancer, and while it’s not quite the same thing, it could potentially be just as dangerous… I've been told the success rate for a surgery to remove the tumour is very thin.”
He runs an open palm over his face, giving his cheek a slap to try snap himself out of it.
“I don't know when I'll be back in VoW -- or, if I’ll ever wrestle another match… But until then, let's try to remain positive. Let's pray that it's nothing serious, that it's just fatigue or something…
No matter what happens, I just wanna thank all of you. Your undying support has always pushed me past my limits… My achievements are your achievements, too, as none of them would ever have been possible without you.
I'm just like all of you now… Actually, in a lot of ways, I always have been -- I was just fortunate enough to live the dream. I'll be in the stands with you, booing the antics of Ryder Blade… Passionately shouting ‘You Wa SHOCK!’ every time Katie Moicelle lays out another opponent…
...and screaming ‘til my lungs give out the day my buddy Heath finally wins the big one.”
He lets out a long sigh, like an enormous weight has been lifted from his broad shoulders.
“That's about it, guys. Just wanted to fill you in on what's going on… Who knows? Maybe you’ll see me in a ring again after all?
Until next time, stay cool. See ya.”
The screen goes black as the video cuts to an end.
