Tuesday afternoon…
In a lower middle class type apartment, there’s a very interesting situation going on. Well, interesting is a matter of perspective so let’s shed some light real quick. Right now we have the world famous “Geekette Extraordinaire” Cali-Kate asleep on a couch with an empty bottle of bourbon tipped over on the ground just out of her arm’s reach, but definitely got there from her having held it. In a lazy chair wearing headsets is her best friend and former roomie, the surfer-looking Lucas, who is busy mashing buttons on Metal Gear Solid 5. Now what makes this interesting is Kate wound up here in the very early morning after a very long night of drinking which was spurred by a Twitter diatribe. On its own that wouldn’t have meant anything, but to Kate the subject matter of that particular exchange was one that really hit home. For all her perkiness and whimsical attitude, Kate is quite sensitive. So it’s probably a good thing she has a high alcohol tolerance. Or not…
“Xdufhjeadfdsd, kdosjddka.”
Lucas catches Kate stirring out of the corner of his eye, but doesn’t even bother to look in that direction. “And a good afternoon to you sunshine.”
“OOOOOOOWWWWWWW, not so loud.”
“Yea, okay.” Lucas hits the pause button on his game and removes his headsets. “So, how’s it hitting you today, Kate?”
“F***, I’m sore… What did I do?”
“You tell me, baby girl. You’re the one who hammered my door at 5:30 this morning already hammered off your feet. And did you actually walk here?”
“Uuuhh… I think so. I definitely remember walking down the street. When did it get so damn bright in here?”
Kate’s reactions are pretty much what you’d expect from someone who’s just gone through one of those nights. For Lucas’ part, he simply let’s Kate have her time to recover as he kicks back and watches her stir around, obviously still not recovered from her reckless night. Seriously, jsut the fact that she had the sense to get to Lucas’ house is nothing short of a minor miracle. So how she’s able to wake up at all should be cause enough for celebration. That would be if Kate were in any condition, much less a mood, to celebrate. Kate struggles to sit up, but can only manage to bring herself to her arms and legs. She buries her head in her arms and lets out a huge sigh. When she doesn’t follow it up, Lucas chimes in.
“Yea, that sounds about right. So I talked to Jami and Parker-”
Kate’s head bolts up. “Oh God! Oh no!”
“Whoa, whoa. You just stop right there missy. You know they’re both worried.”
“I know. I didn’t exactly give them reason to think anything else.”
“So what do you remember?”
“I remember that b**** pissed me off and then people deciding that I was the bad guy in the whole damn thing.”
“And?”
“And Parker and Jami started to go at it and that to me was the last straw.”
“Okay, that’s not quite what I heard.”
Kate grunts as she tries to move herself off the couch. Before she tips herself off the edge though, Lucas bolts up and catches her, helping her to her feet. Kate leans on Lucas before tears start to form in her eyes.
“So they told you?”
“They told me you lost your temper. And, girl, I’ve been saying you have one of the worst tempers for the longest time. So really you did it to yourself.”
“Lucas, you don’t get it. I’m the one standing up for Jami and myself because no one else has. Jami has to go to counseling and it’s making a joke of her career which is bulls***. Meanwhile, I get tossed a couple of matches and maybe I’m lucky to even get teamed with her now. We’re supposed to be a f***ing tag team, but we’re sure not getting treated like one.”
“What do you want baby girl? Not like either of you have been in the ring for awhile. You can’t be expecting things to just go your way in the ring or out. Just not gonna happen that way.”
“It’s not about getting our way. It’s about getting respect. Sure, some of the people like us, but the ones who don’t really puts a damper on us.”
“So fight for the respect, fine! But don’t become everything that you always go against just to earn that respect. I would have thought trying to pull what you did with Kenzi would have taught you that already. Kate, you won two championships in your first year. You could win two more in this second year if you just stop and think for a little while.”
Kate manages to take a couple steps by herself as she tries to shake out the heaviness of her head. She looks around as if thinking about something. Whatever she had in mind is quickly replaced by a sudden urge to rush to the bathroom. Into the hall she runs, with a slightly amused Lucas following close behind. Kate goes over the toilet and lets out another groan. Lucas leans against the doorframe as he watches.
“So what are you going to do? Gonna go back out there like the champ you are or just gonna keep drinkin and crashin on the couch?”
“Lucas, I… for once don’t know what to do. I know what I should do, but how am I supposed to face any of them now?”
“You love them don’t you? Maybe you just need to show them how much you really care about your relationships with them.”
“That’s what I’ve been doing.”
“Maybe, but maybe you need to come at it from a different perspective. Take Parker’s perspective for instance. How does he feel when you ditch him and leave him completely alone? Or do you really think Jami needs all that defense? She seems perfectly capable of handling herself mostly. Maybe you just need to take it a day at a time. For once in your life Kate, just don’t go all in.”
There’s a few strange minutes of Kate just bent over the toilet and Lucas simply standing there waiting for her to respond. Kate’s mind is a flurry of emotion: anger at the people who think they know better, sadness at the way she has conducted herself, desperation to run to someone just to be held and comforted, and a myriad of other things that disappear before she can even really feel them. Kate’s eyes dart about as she looks for something, anything that could give her an answer.
“Lucas, do you still have my old Zelda tote?”
“Yea, right where you left it. Why?”
Kate hops up and goes into the one empty room in the apartment. The room that used to be hers. When she enters she simply stares at it for awhile as if something else has struck her. She shakes it off after a few seconds and heads for the closet and pulls out a small tote that was stuffed in a corner.
“Only thing I left behind so I’d always have a reason to come back.”
“Gee thanks.”
“You know what I mean. I’ll bring it back once I’m done with it.”
“Wait, whoa, what?”
“I gotta go Lucas. I gotta just… go. Leave. Maybe some reflection will help.”
“Kate uh-uh, that ain’t the way.”
“It’s the only way. I can’t possibly go back now after everything. Thanks for helping me out.”
Kate gives Lucas a quick kiss on the cheek. “But Kate that’s-” Kate’s already out the door and closed it behind her. “-not even remotely what I meant.”
::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
I’d like to say that all that was as much an act as some of my other times have been. Fact is though, that wasn’t just the scene, that’s my reality. I mean I learned a long time ago that you can’t drink your problems away, but it sure helps the immediate pain and makes it manageable to face later. And then there are the times that it doesn’t help all that much after all. Maybe I’m just spinning my wheels or maybe I just don’t have what it takes to be that person.
All I can do now is focus on the stuff I know is coming. Like Katalina and Blink. Our first opponents in VoW. By now everyone knows everything about the LAW deal between Casa de Kami and the management there. For my part, I just want to help Jami get to the level I know she can be at. I don’t really care how that makes me sound. Hell, I’ve got my victories and matches and my own way of getting it done in the ring. So I’m not worried one bit there.
On the other hand, going into a match against a friend and another skilled opponent kinda does get me a little nervous. Seriously, first match jitters got a 10 hit combo on me because of that. Katalina is someone I look up to in many ways. She’s strong and beautiful and intelligent. Everything that I could aspire to personally, but probably could never achieve. And Blink, well the record speaks for itself so not much can be said there. Put any one of them solo and you’d still probably think that it was some pre-made group working together, but teamed together, that’s a holy s*** we gotta play this really tight because there’s no way they’re gonna give us an inch to make a mistake
That’s it. That’s all I want to say today. I’ve got a lot of thinking to do. And a lot of training before Breakthrough. Cut it off, just-
