So today is it. The day has finally arrived. No more set-backs. No more bull shit. I’m finally going to be able to see my children for the first time in three fucking years. Words cannot describe how I’m feeling right now, I can’t wait to see their beautiful little faces again.
Angela has been amazing throughout this whole thing, and I have her to thank for finally getting to this moment. She’ll say that it’s me who has done this for myself, and yeah I have come a long way since my first therapy session with her, but had it not been for her, not only would I have never seen my kids again, but I wouldn’t even be alive right now.
My life has turned around for the better, and now it’s about to come full circle...
As I make my way down the street towards Cafe Grumpy, kind of ironic the name of this place because grumpy is far from how I’m feeling right now. I just hope that they recognize me still after so long, what if they don’t? So many thoughts are racing through my head...so many emotions pulsating through my body.
Dressed in a pair of black leather high heeled boots, a pair of black leather skin tight trousers, a black Nightwish Imaginaerum T-shirt and a black leather jacket, I reach the front door and pause for a few moments. Closing my eyes I take a long deep breath in through my nose and slowly exhale through my mouth before finally pushing the door open and entering the coffee shop.
Glancing around for several moments, my heart becomes overwhelmed with emotion when I finally spot them, sitting at a table with Angela and Matt. Nick sitting next to Angela, drawing a picture with her as Chelsea is sitting on Matt’s knee working on a picture of their own.
“My babies...”
I take a few steps forward and all of a sudden, my legs turn to jelly as I collapse, my hands covering my mouth as I burst into tears of happiness causing them both to look over to me. Their eyes widen with delight and quickly run over to me.
“Mommy!!!”
“You’re here!!!”
They wrap their tiny arms around me as I embrace them tightly, not wanting this moment to ever end, never wanting to let them go ever again.
“I-I’ve m-missed you s-so m-much!”
Angela looks over and smiles as she urges Matt to get up and follow her to the kids and me.
"Was almost afraid you weren't gonna come."
Looking up to her, with tears streaming down my face, still holding onto my babies, I smile.
“Are you kidding? I wasn’t going to miss this for the world!”
I glance over to Matt who shows a slight hint of a smile, yet still trying to maintain his big, tough guy persona with his arms folded over his chest as he nods at me.
“Stacy...”
Finally breaking away from them, I slowly stand to my feet and I can’t help but lunge at him, wrapping my arms around him, catching him by surprise.
“Thank you for this!”
Lightly patting my back a few times, he pulls himself away from me, obviously not too pleased with the contact.
“I didn’t do this for you. I did it for them...”
"Well regardless of who you did it for, you did the right thing, Matthew."
He nods before heading back over to the table and picking up a small stuffed wolf toy, bringing it back over, he hands it to me.
“This is Chelsea’s favourite toy, it was a gift from Veronica. I hope you’ll look past that it’s a gift from her and let her have it...”
Taking it from him, I slowly nod as I stare at it. The fact this is a gift from that woman and the fact it’s a wolf, I’ll admit that it hurts, but if it’s Chelsea’s favourite toy, I’m not going to be petty and refuse to let her play with it.
“Of course...”
Crouching down beside my little angel, I hand her the toy and smile.
“I hope you thanked Veronica for this lovely gift, Chels...”
She nods, smiling as she cuddles into it.
“I wuv it so much, Mommy.”
I smile before kissing her on the forehead, standing back up tall again.
"Now...let's all walk over to the table and discuss how this is all gonna work. I want to come to a true agreement between you two...for these kids. Please, are you both willing to finalize things and give these two angels their FULL family back."
Without hesitation, I nod.
“Yes...”
We both glance over to Matt who unfolds his arms, placing his hands into his pockets.
“Yeah, sure...let’s do it.”
A large smile crosses my face as we all head back over to the table, and as we do, I feel two small hands take hold of mine and look down to see both Nick and Chelsea have taken my hands in theirs.
“We wuv you, Mommy...”
“Yeah, we never forgot about you...”
Smiling at both of their beautifully lit up faces, we reach the table and all of us take a seat each as Angela picks up her briefcase, opening it up and taking out some documents. Both Nick and Chelsea elect to sit either side of me and they go back to drawing.
“Are you two going to draw Mommy a picture?”
They both nod, focused on their drawings as I kiss both of them on the head before turning my attention to Angela.
"Alright, so lets get started here. Matthew, I know you told me you had a few ground rules you wanted to set, and being the one with the right to the majority of custody, I'll allow it."
Please don’t be too restrictive, Matt. I beg of you, don’t ruin this for me.
“Honestly, the only ground rule I really have is that Stacy doesn’t try and turn the kids against Veronica, I’ve spoken with her and she’s agreed she won’t do the same. Other than that, I know Stacy isn’t stupid, she knows how to look after them so, I trust her.”
Thank you Matt, thank you so much.
"Well, that's good to hear. Stacy, floor is to you then, how do you want this to work?"
“I’d like to have Nick and Chelsea every other week if that’s okay? I feel like I am ready for that and, with Jennifer around too...well, she already does an amazing job with Elena so she’d love to help me look after these two little tykes as well...”
I begin to tickle both of them and they giggle, that sound is music to my ears and fills my heart with so much love and joy.
"Alright, and Matthew, your thoughts?"
Leaning back in the chair, he once again folds his arms and lightly nods.
“If the kids are happy with that, then so am I...”
"Will Veronica understand this kind of schedule?"
“She’s going to have too. As much as she loves them, this isn’t about what she wants, it’s about what they want. Just like it’s not about what Jennifer wants either, both Stacy and I understand this which is why we’re leaving our respective partners out of it.”
Nodding in agreement with him, I’m glad that he’s being more respectful and understanding of this than the last time.
“Matt’s right, this isn’t about what our partners want, it’s about what we want but most importantly, it’s about what Nick and Chelsea want.”
"Well, that is very true, however in child custody cases this has to be something that every party needs to really be on the same page with, otherwise it creates problems down the line."
Matt lets out a small sigh, I can tell he just wants to get this over with, and honestly so do I. But of course, this is important.
“After what Stacy mentioned at our last meeting, I mentioned to V that it would probably be an every other week deal and after a little persuasion, she agreed that it would be fine.”
“And Jen has said to me on numerous occasions that she’ll be happy with whatever terms are agreed upon.”
Matt sits forward, rubbing his hands together, obviously itching to get the Hell out of here. Either he just wants to get away from two women he’s not overly fond of, or maybe he’s got to be somewhere soon.
“So is that it? Do we need to sign anything? I have some business I need to take care of so if we can wrap this up soon, I’d appreciate it.”
"I would love too Matt, but legally I have to cover every basis. Were holidays discussed?"
“V suggested that for all holidays, and the kids’ birthdays that they spend half the day with each of us and we alternate who they stay with overnight.”
Wow, Veronica suggested that herself? That’s...actually kinda nice of her...although she probably felt that she had to say something like that in the interest of fairness, but I’ll take it.
“That’s fine with me...”
"Alright, has there been suggestions at any point for vacations? Considerations for bringing everyone together at once for the kids every now and then?"
Oh God. Here’s where everything goes south. There isn’t a cat in Hell’s chance Veronica would want to spend time with me, or Jen for that matter. Looking into Matt’s eyes as he looks back at me, I can tell he’s thinking the same thing. No. Not now. Not after I’ve seen them for the first time in three years.
“I...don’t know if Veronica would be okay with wanting to spend any time with Stacy or Jennifer in all honesty.”
“What if Mommy helps us make a pwesent for Vewonica? Maybe den she’ll be happy...”
We all look over to Nick as he smiles at us before going back to his drawing. Such a little genius. I turn back to Matt and Angela.
“That could work...and I’m willing to do anything to make this as easy and as beneficial as possible for everyone involved. I want Veronica to know that even though we may have our differences, I still value the love she has for Nick and Chelsea...”
"Hmm, how does that idea sound to you Matt? Seems Nick here could have just solved a big issue here."
“We could certainly give it a try. I’m with Stacy on this one, it would be nice for the kids to spend time with all four of us at the same time.”
“We could all go to Disney Wowld togever and scawe Daddy again on da wide with da singing dolls!”
“Yeah! Dat was so funny! Also, Nick...Mommy’s scawed of dose dolls too!”
They both giggle with one another as both Matt and I look at each other, shaking our heads as we can’t help but chuckle a little.
"Well then, I think that just about does the verbal agreements. Now for the paperwork, Matt I need you to take and sign this for me, feel free to check over it all, and once the signature is there we will have a legally binding joint custody once again for the kids which I will submit to the court and to child services in both the states of residence."
He nods as Angela passes him the paperwork and after quickly skimming through it, he takes the pen from her and signs it.
“I’m glad we’ve finally got this sorted out, ladies.”
"As am I. And I think it's nice to see you two agreeing. It's not easy enjoying someone you separate from, I fully understand that, but this is a good step for inner happiness and the happiness of the best thing that ever happened between you two. These kids should always come first, and I'm glad we can finally realize that, even after so long."
“I’m just...happy that I get to see these guys again after three long years...”
“Three years, huh? I didn’t realize it had been that long. Where does the time go?”
I smile and nod, it’s nice to see that even with everything that’s happened he’s willing to allow this to happen. And with that, Matt stands to his feet as does Angela before they share a handshake.
“Well, I better get going now. You two be good for Mommy okay? And Daddy will see you in a week, okay?”
"Actually Matt, if it's okay with you. I'd like to keep them for two weeks to begin with as I have a holiday in mind."
"Okay. I'm fine with that. I'll see you two in two weeks then, okay?"
"Actually Matt, if it's okay with you. I'd like to keep them for two weeks to begin with as I have a holiday in mind."
"Okay. I'm fine with that. I'll see you two in two weeks then, okay?"
They both nod, still focusing on their drawings as Matt nods to me before grabbing his jacket and leaving the coffee shop. Just as Angela goes to sit back down, I lunge forward and wrap my arms around her, more tears falling down my cheeks.
“Thank you so much! For everything! If it weren’t for you...not only would I not be sitting here with my kids for the first time in three years, but I’d probably be dead. I don’t think I’d ever be able to repay you in full, but since we first met I’ve been saving up a little money here and there and I’m going to donate five thousand dollars to the Dave Thomas Foundation of Adoption.”
"Five th...Stacy...you don't have to do that for me."
“But I want too...you’ve given me my life back. And not only that but you’ve given me the honor of having yet another great friend in my life.”
Angela tears up a bit as she smiles and nods, hugging tightly onto me, she doesn't feel like she wants to let go.
"Thank you for this Stacy. The people at the foundation are going to be so happy hearing this, that's going to help so many kids."
And with that, Angela and I spend a little while longer helping Nick and Chelsea with their drawings before deciding to part ways until the next time we meet.
I’m so happy right now. Nothing can ruin this for me, absolutely nothing. My life is finally whole again. I have a beautiful new partner and now my two little bundles of joy are back in my life. For the first time in three years, I finally feel complete again.
And now it’s time for them to meet my sweet chinchilla...
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I cannot wait to see the look on Jen’s face when she sees that I’ve finally got Nick and Chelsea back with me. We’ve talked about what we’re going to do as a family for several weeks, and seeing how excited it made her feel, I knew that I wanted to keep this day a surprise for her.
As excited as she’s been over the prospect of being in my eyes, their second Mommy, I know that she’s been worried whether they’ll accept her into their lives. But I’m certain she’s just worrying about nothing.
They’ll love her, I know they will...
We slowly make our way to the front door of my house, looking down at both Nick and Chelsea, I place my index finger over my mouth, signalling to them that they have to be quiet as they both giggle silently, looking forward to the big surprise.
Opening the door, we quietly enter the house and instantly the smell of Jen’s amazing steak dinner hits my nostrils. I was never really big on steak to begin with, but there’s something about Jen’s that just makes my mouth water.
I hear her humming away to herself in the kitchen, "Storytime" by Nightwish to be precise. I love how since we got together that she’s become such a huge fan of them like me.
“Jen? Honey? I’m home! And I have a couple of little surprises for you!”
"I'm in the kitchen sugar bear! I'm making us some nice sirloins!"
“I know! They smell fantastic!”
Quietly, I usher both Nick and Chelsea forward and we make our way into the kitchen, both of them covering their mouths to avoid any giggling to ruin the surprise. Once the three of us are standing behind her, I pick Chelsea up in my arms and take hold of Nick’s hand.
“Well aren’t you going to welcome your sugar bear home with a kiss?”
Jen giggles as she makes sure the steaks will be okay for a moment, wiping her hands on the apron she's wearing before turning around.
"Come here you beautiful...OH...oh my goodness who do we have here?!?"
“Supwise!!!”
Thanks Chels. Almost deafened me there.
“Honey, these are my kids. Nick and Chelsea...I’ve finally gotten them back...”
I grin from ear to ear as I feel Nick burying his face into my thigh.
“Nick? Aren’t you going to say hi to Jen?”
He shakes his head, forcing me to put Chelsea down who immediately embraces Jen in a hug as I kneel down beside my son, looking into his eyes.
“What’s wrong, sweetie? Are you scared?”
Shaking his head again, he leans in to try and whisper, but you know what kids whispers are like, they can be heard for miles.
“I’m embawassed coz I fink she’s weely pwetty...”
Jen blushes bright red as she kneels down as well and hugs tightly onto Chelsea.
"My goodness, Stacy always told me how amazingly cute you two were, but seeing it in person is amazing. It's so great to finally meet you guys!"
Jen reaches out to Nick rubs his arm.
"Come here handsome boy, you don't have to be embarrassed around little ol' me."
Smiling, he toddles over to her and wraps his arms around her in a hug, the sight of seeing my kids and my girlfriend together tugs at my heartstrings as I begin to tear up. Nick then reaches into his pocket and takes out a little wristband that I helped them make earlier when we were with Angela.
“We made dis for you...Mommy made da fwower on it...she said it’s your favouwite.”
"Aww...sweetie this is beautiful. Thank you guys so much, all of you."
Jen looks to me and tears up a bit herself, why does this woman have to look so beautiful when she cries?
“We’re finally a complete family, Jen. For the first time in three years, I’m finally complete again. And what makes it even better is that I get to share it with you.”
"Well, we aren't fully complete. A little angel should be close to finished with her nap, I brought the crib to the living room if that's okay."
“Of course, honey...that’s fine.”
Chelsea’s eyes light up and stares at Jen with an excited look on her face.
“I have a baby sista?!?!”
Jen looks to Chelsea then me again, I can feel her wanting to burst as she pushes her words out.
"Y-Yes sweetheart...I mean, if you r-really wanna accept m-me as your M-M-Mommy too."
Chelsea leans forward and kisses Jen on the lips, wrapping her arms around her again.
“You wuv my Mommy...so you my Mommy as well...”
“I agwee wiv Chelsea, you my Mommy too...”
Nick now kisses Jen on the lips too and joins in with the hug.
"St-t-t-Stacy..."
The tears flow hard from Jen as she holds my babies tight.
“I told you they’d love you, honey...”
I now get in on the hug now and give Jen a passionate kiss as I rest my forehead on hers, staring deep into her eyes.
“I love you so much...”
"I l-love you...all of you...oh my babies!"
Just then, the soft whimper of our little angel comes from the living room as Jen looks up and smiles.
“Sounds like a certain princess is wanting her Mommies to show her some love too. Do you two wanna meet your baby sister?”
Nick and Chelsea jump up and down with excitement.
“Yes!”
Jen and I stand to our feet and I take hold of my kids’ hands as the four of us make our way into the living room. I sit down on the couch with Nick and Chels sitting either side of me as Jen reaches down into the crib and picks up Elena out of it and sits down beside us.
“She’s bootiful...”
“Just wike our Mommies...”
"Do you guys wanna hold her?"
Both of them look up to me, a look of concern on their faces.
“It’s okay...”
“But...what if we dwop her and make her cwy?”
“I don’t wanna make her cwy, Mommy...”
"You won't babies. All we have to do is sit right here, and the most you guys have to do is make sure you hold her head up. And if she looks uncomfortable, give her a big kiss and she'll feel better."
Nick sits up properly on the couch as Jen carefully places Elena into his arms and with a little help from both of us, we position his arms in the correct place.
“There you go, sweetie...”
Chelsea sits on my lap and leans forward, kissing her softly on the forehead before looking up to Jen.
“What’s her name?”
"Her name is Elena Marie."
Nick looks down at her and also kisses her on the forehead.
“Hewwo Ewena...my name is Nick and I’m your big bwuva.”
“Mommy’s middle name is Mawie as well...”
"Mhm, that's where I got it from. Elena is named after two very important women to me, one of them being your Momma who is the most amazing person I've ever had in my life."
“Who’s da ova woman?”
"Katie Moicelle, one of Mommy and me's best friends who used to be a lot closer to Mommy. She is someone you guys will definitely meet, I promise."
“Definitely, she’s a lovely person, you’ll absolutely love her.”
“Can I hold Ewena now pwease? Nick’s holded her for ages...”
"Of course. Is it okay to give Chelsea a turn, Nick?"
He nods as Chelsea sits down beside him as we help him pass her over and make sure she’s holding her properly. Elena grunts a little, slightly startling my little girl as her face begins to curl up, looking like she’s about to burst into tears as she looks over to Jen.
“I...hurt her didn’t I? I’m sowwi, Mommy!”
"No no baby, it's okay! That grunt is just how she says hi right now."
Jen nuzzles her head against Chelsea's and kisses her softly on the cheek, Elena opening her eyes more and looking at my princess.
“I wuv you, Ewena...”
For a second time, she kisses Elena softly on the forehead and she grunts some more making Chelsea giggle.
“She’s funny...”
"She is quite the comedian, isn't she Stacy?"
Jen giggles as Elena pops her lips a bit and gives a sorta 'kiss' to Chelsea, which makes my sweet chinchilla start tearing up again.
“She is...come here, honey...”
She leans forward and I give her another passionate kiss, stroking the back of her head as I do so.
“Can you two make a baby bwuva for me to pway wiv too?”
Jen blushes bright red as she looks at me again, I think I feel the blood rushing to my cheeks too.
"Uhhhhh...hehe...I mean it m-maybe could be something worth a try one day, Nick. If Mommy really w-w-wants too and is staying with me forever."
“Of course I’m going to stay with you forever, honey. And I would really love to have a baby with you one day if we can...”
"I mean...anything is possible. Heh...we could race against Matt and Veronica to see who does it first...they might have the better chance though."
Stroking my hand through Jen’s hair, I stare deeply into her eyes and smile.
“I don’t care when we have one, just knowing I could have a baby with you is good enough for me, honey.”
"I wanna give that to you so bad, baby...you deserve that so much, and I can actually risk some job time for it."
I wrap my arm around her and give her another passionate kiss as the four of us play with Elena, all of us happy.
I feel so complete now. For the first time in three long years, I finally feel complete. And knowing that Jen wants to have a baby with me has made me fall even more in love with her. Nothing would make me happier than to have a baby with my sweet angel.
This is the official start of my brand new life. My brand new life full of positivity and happiness...
