Tuesday afternoon…
The weather is so peaceful and bright. It’s the perfect day to be enjoying life. A day for picnics and nature hikes, a horse ride through winding trails, a beach day with toes in the sand and surf. Summer may be gone and autumn taking its place, but the lingering effects clearly still remain. The warm weather makes for light wispy clouds across the sky as the sun creates shadows in the trees where a funeral is taking place. Despite the inherent depression usually associated with such an event, there are only a couple faces with tears being shed. One is a middle aged woman in the black veil indicative of being the wife of the deceased. There is a mix of other wealthy looking individuals of a similar age and then right next to the wife sits the world famous Geekette Extraordinaire Cali-Kate. Flanking Kate are her own friends, including Destiny and Jamilyn Cornett. Others include Jessica Sears, Alex Yin, Katie Moicelle, and Parker Van Peters.
As we approach this scene, the minister has just finished his words and the casket is lowered into the ground. Kate takes the wife’s hand. At this close up, the resemblance is striking. It is clear that this is Kate’s mother which colloquially makes this her father’s funeral, but Kate herself has no tears to shed for the man who never accepted her lifestyle. Her mother, on the other hand, turns to Kate and manages through her tears.
”Thank you for being here, my sweet. I know that-”
”Mom, don’t. Just don’t.”
”But you will at least stand at the end of the ceremony I hope.”
”Of course, Mom. If Destiny can join us.”
”Yes, I’d welcome that.”
Kate and Destiny smile at each other as the casket reaches its final resting place. Everyone stands and moves for the chapel. Inside, the decorations are of Kate’s father, myriad pictures and slides all over the walls showing various points in his life. On a raised platform, a picture of the Bos family, from when Kate was still an infant, stands next to Kate, Destiny and her mother. The others have given their condolences and one by one, it is Kate’s friends turns. First up is Jami who hugs both Kate and Destiny, and they hug back, but her focus is on Kate.
”You’re going to be okay, right Katiekat?”
”I’ll be fine Jamibug. Thanks for making the trip. I know being away from Tyler and the girls…”
”You will always be first in these situations.”
Kate and Destiny both smile as Jami moves on. Taking her place is Katie Moicelle who also exchanges hugs with Kate.
”Thanks for letting me help you as much as I can.”
”Katie, you being here means more to me than anything I can say. Thank you for your time.”
Katie smiles and moves on. Taking her place is Alex, probably the only one among Kate’s friends who has fears in her eyes and also hugs Kate, which Kate returns.
”I know he wasn’t the nicest guy, but he did love you. I could still see that.”
”Saying it isn’t going to make it true, Lexikin. If he truly did, he would have accepted my choices, not forced his own.”
Alex shrugs but smiles anyway and moves on. Jessica comes up next.
”Oh Kate…”
”Jess, you came out here at all. That means so much no matter what. And hey, we’re practically family now too considering I’m unofficially adopted into the Cornett clan.”
Destiny smiles, placing a hand on Kate’s shoulder, as Jessica smiles and hugs Kate, with Kate wrapping her arms around her. When they break, it’s Parker’s turn. Kate and Parker pause for a moment before she throws her arms around him and he returns the gesture, causing look of ire from Destiny.
”I’m sorry for your loss, Kate.”
”You know better than anyone what I thought of him. Even Jami doesn’t really know like you do.”
”Wow, something I finally beat Jami on.”
”Parker…”
”No, I get it. I just can’t believe it took this for you to say it. And something I shouldn’t really be number one in.”
”Hey, enough.”
”Destiny, it’s okay. Parker, we can talk later if you really want to keep that going.”
”I don’t, but I would like to talk to you.”
Kate nods as he walks off, but Destiny refuses to acknowledge him further. Kate’s mother takes her leave as well as she walks off to talk with Parker apparently.
”I can’t believe you’re gonna give him another chance. Hasn’t he had enough? Hasn’t he done enough to you?”
”You make it sound like he abused me.”
”He may as well be. Don’t you see he’s trying to get you to do what he wants? He’s exactly like your dad.”
”Destiny, we’re just gonna talk, we’re not gonna fuck. He and I both know that we can’t do that ever again.”
As Kate finishes her words, a young man is spotted making his way through the small crowd and approaches Kate and Destiny.
”Hello. I just wanted to extend my condolences to you as well before I left.”
Kate and Destiny look at each other a little confused. ”Well… thank you… ummm?”
”Oh it’s okay, you don’t really know me, but I just wanted to tell you how great a man our father was to this planet. And the loss it has suffered.”
Kate’s eyes go wide and Destiny’s hands cover her mouth. ”Jeremy!”
”Nice to finally meet you in person, sis. I hear you been tearing the world upside down looking for me.” He looks over at Destiny and grins. ”With some help of course.”
”Who the fuck do you think you are and how the fuck did you get control of dad’s business?”
Jeremy reaches into his coat pocket and pulls out a small stack of folded papers. ”Well I actually do know who I am. Blood test showing we do share the same father. Your dad had a long affair with my mom after your mom had her accident and well, I’m the result.”
Kate and Destiny both look over the paper. Destiny’s eyes go wide. ”I know this lab, Kate. They’re small but they’re legitimate and respected in the DNA testing, and splicing, community.”
”They also belong to me, just as much as your dad’s business. I invested in them when they started a couple years ago. And they aren’t the only ones. I’m primary shareholder in corps you didn’t even know existed, but have more influence than Bill Gates and Donald Trump together could dream of.”
”Impossible. You’d be a media darling. There’d be cameras following you everywhere. Everyone would know your business. They’d know every time you wiped your ass after taking a shit.”
”The thing about money and influence, Kate, if you’d bother to use yours at all instead of airing all your dirty laundry on Twitter, is you can keep the media out of your business no matter what they think of you. Politicians do it all the time. In fact, most of them do it now because I tell them to.”
”Bullshit, no one has that kind of control.”
Jeremy chuckles. ”I could call up Kim Jong Un right now and have him move missiles to South Korea’s border and in the same minute call Xi Jinping and have him not only support the move, but initiate a naval blockade to keep others from interfering.”
Kate shakes her head. ”That’s a lot of big talk you’re doing. You know what I’ve noticed about guys who do that much damn talking. They’re overcompensating. In a really over exaggerated way. And you’ve just made a bunch of baseless claims. If you were really my dad’s kid you wouldn’t have to talk that big. So whatever you did, you need to hand my dad’s business back.”
Jeremy sighs a little, pursing his lips and nodding his head. "You know what sis? You’re right I should take a few smaller actions to prove myself and what I can do.” Jeremy looks at Destiny again. “You may want to get in touch with your dad and ask him about the contacts he’s had tailing me the last couple of weeks. He’s going to find that many have taken an early retirement and most of the others… will not be taking anymore calls.”
”What?”
”You shitstain. What did you do?”
”I told you, money and influence. That’s how it’s always been Kate. Not your cosplays and your salacious pictures or your multiple lovers. I have real power in this world sis. And you are just gonna have to live with knowing you did nothing to stop it.”
”Wait, wait, this is where you’re gonna tell me your evil plan to take over the world?”
”Didn’t you hear what I just said? I already have taken over. Politicians, military generals, CEOs, drug lords, warlords and everything in between. I do have it all, baseless or not, it’s the truth.”
”You can’t be that much older than me though. How did you manage that?”
Jeremy nods to Kate. ”Yea, I’m just 18, but our father’s contacts went deeper than he was willing to trust Kate with. That and generations of my mom’s family have been playing world politics for centuries. And now I’ve culminated it all. Which brings me to the other reason I’m here.”
”What’s that?”
Jeremy smirks and moves in front of Destiny. He winks at her before taking her hand gently and kissing it. ”I’m here to treat this vision of beauty to a night she will never want to forget.”
Destiny pulls her hand back, almost slapping him in the process. ”Excuse me?”
”One night is all I ask to show you everything that you’ve never known you wanted.”
”Not interested, but you know if you’re really looking for someone, I’ve got an older sister, Tienne, who’s much hotter than I am.”
”I’m not interested in your gender fluid sibling. Oh yes I had to learn all about you and your family since Kate’s basically one of you now. I know all your family’s secrets, the ones they try to hide and the ones that they put out publicly, but only in bits and pieces.”
”You leave them out of it. You wanna take me on, then game on bitch. But you will not come anywhere near them. And Destiny has given you her answer.”
Jeremy clicks his tongue a couple times then pulls out a business card and hands it to Destiny. Destiny pushes it back, but instead he drops it at her feet. ”Why don’t you take a few days and think about it? I’ll make you this deal if it helps speed that process a little, Destiny spends a night with me and our father’s business goes back to the board as it was meant to. Of course, if I don’t hear something soon, your lives may become more… complicated.”
Jeremy walks off with a grin on his face. Kate watches him leave with a glare as Destiny looks down at the card and picks it up. There’s a few moments before Jami walks back up.
”That was him wasn’t it?”
Although Jeremy has disappeared from sight, Kate continues looking out over the crowd, still looking for him. She nods and blankly says, "Yea, that was him."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I’m in a fucking bad mood.
No I’m not just in a fucking bad mood, I am in a seriously fucking bad mood. Like the infamous Dives I could really just start screaming at the next asshat who tries to pull something and… God, this just gets me so damn irritated. It was bad enough that assclown Iser got involved in something that was not his business and got me in one of the most depressed states I have been in since I started in this business but after that mess at my dad’s funeral he next person who steps up is gonna see a really different side.
See so far, I’ve been pretty live-and-let-live, even after what Sin City Affinity pulled, even after what Katalina did, I’ve kinda let it all slide. And even though the shit at Breakthrough and my dad’s funeral were as different as Halo is from Tetris, it’s put me into a state of mind that I don’t go to very often. In fact, I don’t like going here because of how I act when I do. It’s not the Jedi way and it’s not my way, but I’ve had it up to here with the crap I’ve had to put up with. Oh sure everyone’s looking at me like “Is she serious? This shortshit blonde bobbleheaded Barbie doll is gonna try and bear claws now.” Well maybe you didn’t notice that the losses I’ve suffered so far have been because of tactics not kosher with the rules of a match. If that’s what it really takes then you know what I’ll live with it. It just means that I come back that much more determined. If the losses at least had been fair I could go into this match with a clear head and just say hey that’s how the cookie crumbles for me.
Problem is that isn’t what happened. And now I’ve got this guy Arthur Kingsley as my next opponent. A singles match. Well, at least I won’t have to say that there was anyone except myself, and of course the fans, that I let down should worst come to worst. But this time is gonna be different. This time, I have everything to prove and nothing else to lose. I’ve been the joke of VoW since I got here, but at Breakthrough, no more. I’m not a newbie, not some low level starting area artard. I’ve had it up to here with the shit I’ve taken from just about everyone on the roster. And Arthur, you’re just the guy that’s gotten in my way this time. I’d go into the whole thing of not being personal and just being business, but that would be saying the fucking obvious. So I won’t bore you with that.
Just know that when it comes to Breakthrough I don’t have any thoughts about losing. So stow any thoughts you have about winning to the back of your head because it’s my time to shine, outside of Casa de Kami, outside of Chaotic Light and show that I am not just the flash in the pan. I am a contender and the next time a title opportunity is given to me, no matter what it is, it’s gonna be mine. So Arthur hope that your respawn timer isn’t quick because after how badly I’m gonna own your ass, you’re not gonna want to look at a ring for awhile. Ta-ta.
