The scene opens as I am here in the bedroom of my hotel room in the Plaza Hotel, packing my suitcase getting ready to go on a bit of a road trip with Tayla. After finding out that the next edition of Breakthrough would be held on October 27th, twelve days from now, and that it was emanating from the Berry Events Center in Marquette, Michigan, I decided that Tayla and I would spend most of those twelve days going around Lake Michigan and spend two or three days in Illinois, Indiana and Ohio before finally arriving in Michigan. Dressed in my usual attire of a pair of black leather high heeled boots, a pair of skin tight black leather trousers, a black Nightwish Imaginearum T-shirt and a black leather jacket, I finally finish packing and zip up my suitcase when I hear a knock at my hotel room door.
Stacy
Just a second!
I pick up the suitcase off the double bed and place it down on the floor before leaving the bedroom and heading towards the front door. I take hold of the handle and push it down before opening the door to find myself standing face to face with someone I never thought I would ever see again, dressed in a pair of light brown leather boots, a pair of dark blue denim jeans, a black Trivium T-shirt and a black leather jacket.
Stacy
Matt?
My ex-husband smiles at me, cradling our daughter, Chelsea in his arms, who is dressed in a white and pink baby onesie. Suddenly my attention is then diverted by the voice of our son, Nick.
Nick
Mommy!
Nick, who is dressed in a pair of white sneakers, a pair of dark grey tracksuit trousers and a Batman T-shirt, rushes past his father and I crouch down to his level as he leaps into my arms, wrapping his arms around my neck.
Nick
I missed you Mommy...
A tear slowly rolls down my cheek as I embrace my son, not wanting to let go of him.
Stacy
I missed you too sweetie...
I stand back up, lifting Nick up in my arms.
Stacy
Wow, you’re such a big boy now....I can hardly lift you...
I give him a kiss on the forehead and stroke his hair before turning my attention back to Matt.
Stacy
What are you doing here?
Matt
May I come in?
I nod as Matt enters the room and closes the door behind him, he then puts Chelsea down on the floor and she begins crawling towards me. I put Nick down and he takes Chelsea by the arm and helps her to her feet.
Matt
Nick, why don’t you take your sister into the other room and play whilst Mommy and Daddy talk...
Nick
Okay Daddy...
Nick then helps Chelsea, who is obviously just learning to walk, into the other room.
Stacy
They grow up so fast...
We make our way into the kitchen during a bit of an awkward silence.
Stacy
Can I get you a coffee or something?
Matt
No thanks, we’re not stopping long...
I nod before I grab a bottle of red wine and pour myself a glass and then taking a large gulp of it.
Stacy
So...what did you want to talk to me about?
He takes a seat at the kitchen table and I sit down opposite him.
Matt
You know, when you first gave me those divorce papers and the ring, at first I thought this whole...having feelings for the same sex was just a phase you were going through...
He lets out a sharp chuckle and I flash him a quick smile before taking another drink of my wine.
Matt
Then when I heard about your engagement to Tayla, that was when I realized it wasn’t just a phase...
Stacy
I know I broke your heart Matt, and I’m truly sorry for that, but I can’t help it if I have feelings for somebody else...
Matt
I know Stace, and even though it did hurt me, I’m glad that you had the decency to be honest and upfront with me about all of this rather than going behind my back and cheating on me...
Stacy
What’s all of this leading too Matt?
Matt sits back in the chair and lets out a sigh.
Matt
I’m moving back to England, Stacy...that’s the reason why I’m here...so you could say goodbye to Nick and Chelsea...
My heart suddenly sinks and tears begin to form in the corner of my eyes as I realize what this news means, I may never see my children ever again.
Matt
I got a job offer in London, and Chloe has family there because she’s originally from London herself...
Stacy
Chloe?
Matt
My girlfriend, we’ve been seeing each other for two months now...
Maybe it’s my paternal instincts but I already hate this Chloe and I don’t even know her, she’s going to be my children’s new mother and there’s not a damn thing I can do about it.
Matt
I know this is going to be hard for you, and I don’t want to make it sound like this is your fault...but I’m done waiting for you to come back into my life...into our children’s lives. You’ve already moved on and it’s time we did too...I’m sorry...
Tears slowly roll down my cheeks and I quickly wipe them away as I nod.
Stacy
No, it’s okay, I understand...
Matt
Okay...well, we’ve got a plane to catch so...I’ll go and get Nick and Chelsea so you can say goodbye...
I nod before Matt gets to his feet and makes his way into the other room as I get up as well and compose myself so I don’t look upset in front of my children. After a few moments, Matt comes back out of the room with Chelsea in his arm and holding Nick’s hand with his free hand. We all make our way to the front door and I open it, letting the three of them leave the room before they turn back around to face me.
Matt
Nick, say goodbye to Mommy...
I crouch down to Nick’s level and he wraps his arms around me and I wrap my arms around him.
Nick
Bye Mommy...
Stacy
Goodbye sweetie...be a good boy for Daddy and take care of your sister for me okay?
Nick
Okay...
We break our embrace and I return to an upright position before I stroke my hand through Chelsea’s hair and softly kiss her on the forehead.
Stacy
Goodbye my sweet little princess, never forget that Mommy loves you with all her heart, and that she’ll never forget you...
I glance over to Matt who is starting to tear up himself, however he quickly composes himself and takes hold of Nick’s hand again.
Matt
Goodbye Stace...
Stacy
Bye Matt...
He flashes me a solemn smile before making his way down the corridor with Nick and Chelsea as I close the door behind me. I rest my back against the door and I can’t keep the floodgates back any longer as I burst into tears before slowly sliding down to the floor as the scene fades.
