Championship Challenge
As we return from the Buffalo Wild Wings commercial break, the fires slowly begin to erupt from the stage, signalling the entrance for the new I4NI Champion
You can set yourself on fire
You can set yourself on fire
The fires on the stage die down just long enough to show the man awaiting behind them. His body faced towards stage-right with his head and hat tipped, and his performance cane resting against his forehead. On his left shoulder, present for everyone to see as they roared with their approval, was the I4NI Championship. To celebrate, Max trimmed the rest of his outfit tonight in a bronze-esque fashion. His hat and trench coat were trimmed with copper.
Under his entrance attire was casual wear for the evening: a “Panic! At The Disco” band shirt, in favor of the man playing his entrance theme, and a simple pair of jeans. He was not looking for a match tonight.
As the lyrics continued, he approached the ring while pantomiming the words.
She said at night in my dreams
You dance on a tightrope of weird
As he walks along, he mimicked balancing that ‘tightrope’ with the cane outstretched and the belt held close to him.
Oh but when I wake up
You're so normal that you just disappear
He stops and merely shrugs to the word ‘normal’ before walking on.
You're so straight like commuters
With briefcases towing the line
He points to a couple sitting in the front-row with his left hand while his right continues to sway back and forth at his side, making the cane represent that ‘briefcase.’
There's no residue of a torturer
Inside of your eyes
With a warm smile, he points to the lady of the couple with the pseudo complement before turning his attention to the guy with a bit more of a devilish smirk.
She said you're just like Mike Love
But you wanna be Brian Wilson, Brian Wilson
After saying the first of two repeats, he sprints the rest of the way and slides into the ring before pointing to the man again.
She said you're just like Mike Love
But you'll never be Brian Wilson
And I said!
And right after, he whips his head back as the fire crack and spark to life again.
Hey ay ay, hey ay
if crazy equals genius
Hey ay ay, hey ay
if crazy equals genius
The stage and ring-posts explode in a wonderful display of arson as he smiles wickedly towards the roof of the Pavilion.
Then I'm a f[BLEEP]ing arsonist
I'm a rocket scientist
Hey ay ay
If crazy equals genius
He looks back to the stage as his head nods and his body bounces lightly to the last bit of the lyrics. He hold both his cane and his championship close to his chest. Both his smirk and the fires on the stage continue to rise higher and higher towards the ceiling.
You can set yourself on fire
But you're never gonna burn, burn, burn
You can set yourself on fire
But you're never gonna learn, learn, learn
Hey!
The fires crackle one last time at the final “Hey!” before disappearing completely. Crazy=Genius continues to play silently in the background as Max begins to take his bows to the applauding audience. After basking in the adoration for a moment, he places the cane on the ground. He digs through his coat’s pocket and pulls out a microphone. At this point, his music fades completely. He takes in a deep breath before speaking…
Maxwell Soloke: Villanova, Pennsylvania. A pleasure to be here with you all today! If you don’t know who I am, then you’re about to learn. My name is Maxwell Soloke and I am your NEW Eye-For-An-Eye Champion!
Most of the crowd cheers loudly for Soloke, knowing of his accomplishment well. Others just cheered for the mere mention of their hometown. Classic pop. Soloke waits for it to die down before speaking again.
Maxwell Soloke: However, despite that fact, I do not have an opponent lined up for me at Armed and Dangerous coming within the next two weeks! That is a travesty, it really is. HOWEVER! I have an opponent in mind for this affair if she is so willing.
Only a quarter of the crowd anticipates his opponent and cheer loudly as soon as he says the word ‘she.’ The rest keep quiet to listen to him speak. He walks over towards the ropes closest to the staging area before speaking again.
Maxwell Soloke: Joanna Thade! I’m going to be honest with you: if I haven’t just placed myself high on the s[BLEEP]-list of the Horsewomen, then I’m about to right now. I know you’re not going to settle for losing a match like that. Lord knows I didn’t when I first came back. As I see it, the score is still in your favor. You beat the crap out of me back in the Qualifying Match AND the Ironman Match for the Quest for the Case, while I only beat you at Breakthrough 51. Only difference being… I walked away with THIS in my victory.
He pulls the I4NI Championship from his shoulder and holds it high in the sky again.
Maxwell Soloke: The Warchild, is that correct? I’m going to put this nice and simple for you. This is my own personal declaration of war on both you AND your allies! If I want to get to the top, then it’s obvious that I’m going to have to cross every single one of you on my way up there. Hell, truth be told, I have collectively beaten two out of four and came close to taking a win over Talon as well before someone else won the match. Regardless!
He puts the championship back over his shoulder and shrugs it around until it’s comfortable.
Maxwell Soloke: This will be the last time we face off against each other for a while, due to the Third Eye Open tourney. So, why don’t we send off this little back and forth between? This challenge is to you and you alone tonight. Do you wish to take it? One-on-one at Armed and Dangerous! In-fact, let’s make it special. How’s about it, Joanna?
The haunting music box opening notes of Avenged Sevenfold’s “Nightmare” echo through the arena. Fog fills the stage and Joanna Thade steps out from behind the current, warhammer in hand, dressed for her match later tonight. A chorus of boos accompany her as she takes her time getting to the top of the ramp, before the song picks up Joanna motions for it to be cut and brings her microphone to her lips.
Joanna Thade: Do you have a death wish? Or are you just trying to out crazy crazy? Silverhammer, please, I beat you when I didn’t care, and last week you proved yourself lucky and worth more attention than I gave you credit for. But, I’m in the main event tonight against the number one contender for the World title, and her partner a multi time champion everywhere he went. And you’re slotted right where people need to grab a piss or beer before the real fun begins.
Chuckling to herself Joanna ignores the growing Maxwell and “you got pinned” chants. Sauntering down the ramp with Hephty balanced on her shoulders. As she enters the ring she places the warhammer in the corner before stepping right up to Maxwell.
Joanna Thade: You think that just because you can sneak up when I’m not looking, take advantage of the issues between my sisters and myself, hit a big move, and fall into place, that you’re a true champion? You’re a role model, an example? You beat the odds, Maxy, I’ll give you that, but face me one on one for that.
Joanna points at the championship Maxwell has on his shoulder.
Joanna Thade: Title, at the PPV I delivered my first message to VoW at one year ago, called ARMED and DANGEROUS. No, no worthless meat sack, pathetic sheep, like you would stand a chance. You couldn’t beat me at my worst, what makes you think you can beat me when I have no distractions, no interference, nothing to stop me from proving just how much you’re outclassed?
Nose to nose, the Warchild and the Renaissance Man stare. Tension builds until Maxwell takes a step back. He ponders over the points presented to him before speaking into the mic again at a distance from Joanna.
Maxwell Soloke: Y’know, it’s funny really. You have so many insults for me, Joanna. Meat sack? Pathetic Sheep? Also, true champion and a role model? I don’t remember calling myself those things. Hell, with matches like last Breakthrough’s, I’d rather NOT be a role model to others; but let me tell you something that is true.
He pulls the championship belt off of his shoulder and holds it high above Joanna before getting in her face again.
Maxwell Soloke: Don’t you DARE doubt me for a second on being a ‘true champion.’ I’m getting tired of people treating me like I’m the bottom of this company’s roster. I am not yours or anyone else’s punching bag. The primary reason I’m out here tonight is to PROVE my mettle to you, and everyone else in the back, that I’m not just going to end up being a transitional champion. I’m going to prove that my win last time was not a fluke, and most importantly!
He was nose to nose with Joanna again, even shoving her back slightly with his head to hers.
Maxwell Soloke: I’m going to shove down your throat every single insult you’ve thrown at me from our first encounter back in the Qualifying Matches, ‘til now. I’m going to beat you down and PROVE to you that I’m a threat within this company, even if my track record up until now hasn’t been the best by any means. You hear me, crazy? I’m. Going. To. Beat. You. Down. Senseless. I’m going to win AND retain my championship. So, are you going to sit here all day and continue to claim that I can’t take you crazy for crazy in this ring or are you actually going to take my challenge?
Max stepped back again, still holding the title high.
Maxwell Soloke: Maxwell Soloke defends his Eye-For-An-Eye Championship against Joanna Thade at Armed and Dangerous 2016… in a LAST MAN STANDING MATCH. What do you f[BEEP]ing say, Warchild?!
As the crowd collectively gasps at Maxwell's challenge and additional stipulation, Joanna licks her lips with an ear to ear smile. Without the mic to her mouth she asks Maxwell ”Really?” To which the champion responds with motioning for her to answer into the mic for the world to hear. Joanna looks Maxwell up and down like a caged animal looking at a chunk of meat.
Joanna Thade: Really? Last (Wo)man Standing? I say you’re on. But since I plan on ripping you limb from limb, let's get a contract out here and make it official. With two week til Armed and Dangerous can't have you getting cold feet before I get a chance to prove that you are nothing more than lucky.
Maxwell Soloke: I invite you to try and prove that I’m lucky, just as I’m going to prove you WRONG. I’m not going to run from you, Joanna. I’m going to stand and fight!
Joanna Thade: Well if you want a fight we don't have to wait until Armed and Dangerous.
With both competitors tempers rising the crowd begins to chant “Fight! Fight! Fight!” before In This Moment’s “Sick Like Me” brings a collective chorus of boos throughout the stadium. On cue Sky Sangue, dressed to the nine’s as usual, steps out from behind the curtain. Microphone in hand the, now, CEO of VoW makes her way to ringside where surprisingly both Joanna and Maxwell lower the second rope for her. Once she gets situated in the ring, she takes a moment to look over both competitors. She ends up taking the microphone away from Max to address the two’s quarrel.
Sky Sangue: Now I see we have a bit of a problem here. You two want to fight, correct?
The two were standing at opposite sides of Sky, but both nod their heads in agreement as they continue to stare holes into each other. Joanna licking her lips like a hungry animal, while Maxwell kept clenching his fist. Sky recognizes both of their agreements before speaking again.
Sky Sangue: Well, obviously, I cannot force my legal team at this very moment to write up a contract for you guys. At least not tonight. However, a verbal agreement from BOTH of you right now, in front of yours truly, will suffice.
Max stepped up first. He did not dare steal the microphone from Sky, though, so he tugged Joanna’s back for a moment.
Maxwell Soloke: I accept.
Joanna was quick to snatch the microphone back away from the Renaissance Man before agreeing herself:
Joanna Thade: I will glad bleed the stuck pig that stands before us.
Sky gives them both a satisfied smile before speaking again.
Sky Sangue: Then the stage is set. At Armed and Dangerous, Maxwell Soloke will defend the I4NI Championship against Joanna Thade in a Last… Woman Standing Match. There will be no countouts. No disqualifications. Weapons may be used. Whoever is knocked unconscious first loses. VoW is not liable for what happens within the match, however there will be no involving fans, staff, or other wrestlers and we will NOT go overboard.
She makes sure to look over at Joanna with that last remark. The Warchild places a hand on her chest and gives an obvious fake gasp, as if she would ever ponder the thought. Unable to keep things serious Joanna shrugs as she giggles at her own actions.
Sky Sangue: Everything else will be fair game. Spill blood and break a bone or two if you truly wish, I just would like it if we did not have another K.I.A. in this ring. I will be seeing you both at Armed and Dangerous.
The crowd cheer for the announcement as Sky starts to leave the ring now, but right before she does, she gives both wrestlers a passing glance and message:
Sky Sangue: If you thought that Freezer Match was bad, Maxwell… well… I pray you know what you are getting yourself into.
She gives one last glance to Joanna with a grin this time.
Sky Sangue: I know I did when I hired the Warchild in. Good luck.
With that, the CEO of VoW departs from the ring as the two stare off one more time. Max looks over at Joanna before taking a step back and holding his arms out, as if to lead her out first. Without a microphone, his voice did not pick up but it looks like he says:
Maxwell Soloke: Ladies first. It’s not going to be same next time around.
Looking Maxwell up and down, Joanna snarls and chunks the microphone to him below the belt. As the champion doubles over Joanna shouts something at him that the camera's and now dead mic cannot pick up, before stepping over the champion and leaving the ring without a second glance. As Joanna leaves, we cut to the backstage area to another scene.
