The camera brightens as it pans across a small room. Sounds of barking puppies and meowing kittens can be heard, as the viewer is shown images of small cages containing young animals stacked upon one another. As expected, Tyron Bickerton strides into frame; but, what may be more of a surprise, he’s coddling a small kitten to his chest. The purring feline seems no older than three months, as it nuzzles into Tyron’s chest for warmth.
“Good evening, America,” Tyron speaks, stroking the cat on the top of its head. “Prior to Breakthrough #45, I brought you the first interview in the Tour of Self-Destruction series, where we’ll take a look back at all the misdeeds that drug addict Heath Williams has tried to cover up over the years.”
He slowly walks across the room, with the camera following along with him. A middle-aged blonde woman appears in frame, and Tyron comes to a stop next to her.
“Today, I’m coming to you from an Animal Rescue Shelter in Minneapolis, where retired veterinarian Dr. Meghan Gibson takes care of these sick, abandoned young animals. Dr. Gibson, thanks for taking the time.”
“My pleasure,” the woman responds.
“When did you decide to establish this fine animal shelter?” Tyron asks, glancing around the room.
“I retired from my practice in ‘97,” she replies. “When I saw how many poor animals were being abandoned by heartless human beings every day, I knew I needed to do something about it.”
“How could anyone abandon such a beautiful, helpless creature?” Tyron questions, motioning toward the kitten lying in his arms. Almost as if it’s right on cue, the kitten lets out a high-pitched meow that’s both heartwarming and adorable. “About how many animals would you say are left out on the streets?” Tyron asks a follow-up question.
“It’s estimated that roughly 1,000 animals are abandoned daily in the United States,” Dr. Gibson claims, without so much as a graph or chart to back it up as fact. The camera shows a saddened Tyron for a split second, as he shakes his head at the announced figure. “And most of these little guys are under the age of six months old,” she concludes.
The camera shows shots of the distressed animals -- one look at them, and anyone can see that they’ve been through horribly traumatic experiences.
“So you nurse these guys back to health and get them set for adoption by loving families?”
“That’s correct.”
“That’s great! Now, I’m sure you know why I’m here…”
The camera shows Tyron and Dr. Gibson speaking once again.
“...I understand that you know Heath Williams?”
The woman’s expression becomes one of concern as she faintly nods.
“Was Heath one of those thoughtless human beings that abandoned his pets here?”
“I wish he were,” she reacts. “That would be a far less sinister than the truth…”
The camera captures her angst, as she tries to tell the heart-wrenching story.
“He came in here, high as a kite. He demanded we...we skin kittens and puppies alive, so he could use their pelts as fashion…”
There’s a shot of a wide-eyed Tyron, as Dr. Gibson continues to speak.
“I gave him the benefit of the doubt, though; I thought maybe he was acting under the influence of whatever drugs he had in his system at that time… I was convinced that no one man could be that sinister… But, after we had security remove him, he came back several days later…”
“Was he high again?” Tyron asks, off camera.
“No, this time, he was completely sober,” Dr. Gibson replies. “At least he appeared to be.”
“What did he do this time? Did he come to apologise?”
“He did the exact same thing -- demanding we kill the kittens and puppies for his new slippers and scarf. I was mortified; I told him to get out, and never return -- he responded by vowing that he would return with a large hunting knife to ‘hack them up’...”
The woman bursts into tears recalling the event, and Tyron compassionately hands her a tissue.
“Did Heath Williams ever return?” he asks.
“No, he didn’t… We increased security to keep him off the premises. So, even if he did return, he would’ve found it virtually impossible to get inside the building.”
“You’ve been very brave, Doctor,” Tyron announces, shaking hands with the veterinarian.
She nods and leaves the frame, as Tyron turns his attention to the camera now focusing on him.
“Eye-opening, isn’t it?” he states, still gently stroking the helpless kitten in his arms. “Not only has Heath Williams destroyed the lives and future of an entire family by ruining their businesses, but he also makes apparel out of defenseless animals. If you want to save the lives of many innocent creatures like Percy here, we need to stop this tyrant immediately!
Thank you, and goodnight.”
