Thursday afternoon…
This scene opens up inside a hospital. Specifically, a senior care hospital. So to say that there’s nothing exciting happening here is probably as understated as anything else like there’s a bunch of old people here who mostly don’t care for life anymore being taken care of by young people who pray they never end up in a place like this. As nurses and patients mill about in their daily routines, the door to the waiting room opens and in walks the world famous “Geekette Extraordinaire” Cali-Kate with her fiancée “The Coldfire Phoenix” Jamilyn Cornett. Both girls approach the desk where an attendant fills out some paperwork. The attendant looks up at them and smiles.
“Here for a visit, ladies?”
“Yes ma’am. Klavdiya Morozov.”
“Ah, her son mentioned there might be additional visitors today. I’ll just need to see your IDs and if you could fill out these tags we’ll get you to see her.”
The attendant hands two stickers to them as they both pull out their IDs from their purses. While the attendant enters them into a visitors’ registry, they write down their names and stick the labels to their shirts. A little later the attendant buzzes the door at the side and the two ladies walk in and their IDs are returned.
“Mrs. Morozov is in room 24. Down that hall, make a right and it’ll be on your right.”
“Thank you.”
Jami also smiles and nods as they both walk the directions they're given. Jami holds Kate’s hand tightly.
“I’m so excited to meet the woman who basically raised you, baby girl.”
“I hope she likes you. It’d mean so much to me for her to like you. And I really hope you like her.”
“What’s not to like?” Jami kicks up one leg and flutters her eyebrows a little which makes Kate smile. “Katelyn, I’ve never seen you this nervous and this is after dealing with your parents.”
“Klavdiya is much more important to me. Everything I am in terms of personality is because of her. Otherwise I’d just be as boring and stuck-up as my parents.”
They round the corner as they were instructed and see a slightly older man standing outside room 24 with one of the female nurses. Kate and Jami exchange a quick look but don’t pause their steps. The man notices them and steps aside from the nurse.
“Katelyn, так приятно видеть вас.”
“Это хорошо, чтобы видеть вас тоже, Iosif. How is she?”
“Your Russian has improved much, Katelyn. Mother will be proud. And you must be Jamilyn.”
“It’s very nice to meet you, but obviously I’m really looking forward to meeting your mom.”
“Of course. Of course. She’s just finished her meal so she should be good to have company.”
The nurse walked up to them. “I will have to ask that you keep the visit brief. Mrs. Morozov is not doing well, I’m afraid. I was just about to explain to Iosif that the cancer has survived the last treatment. It’s simply growing too fast to be controlled by current treatment methods for her age.”
“How… how long?”
“It’s difficult to be sure, maybe a few days, maybe a few months. Cancer isn’t something that just kills. It tortures until the body simply can’t handle more.”
Jami gripped Kate’s hand even more upon hearing the news even as Kate simply stares, trying to process the information.
“She has lived a long and great life, Katelyn. We should honor that.”
“Yea… yea your right, Iosif.”
“Wait, he calls you Katelyn?”
“Hm? Oh yea, Klavdiya’s family is allowed. Only reason I tell even Lucas that he’s not allowed is because I don’t trust that name from people who have had my parents influence directly on them.”
“But Klavdiya worked for your parents.”
“But her kids did not. Love, just know in my head it makes a difference.”
Jami gives Kate a weird look before shaking her head. The two girls head into the room while Iosif and the nurse continue conversing outside. Kate widens her eyes at the sight of the elderly woman in the bed. Even in her late 70s, Klavdiya might actually look rather spry and active were it not for the paleness in her skin and the bags under her eyes. Propped up and watching TV, Klavdiya slowly turns her head as she noticed the approaching ladies out of the corner of her eye. Her smile grows even bigger and she speaks in her heavy Russian accent.
“Oh, my little девушка! You’ve come to see old Klavdiya!”
“Of course, Klavdiya. And I want you to meet someone.” Kate hops a little excitedly as she pulls Jami toward the bed. Jami smiles at Kate’s newfound energy. “This is my fiancee, Jamilyn Michaeleigh Cornett.”
“Невеста? Девочка ты слишком молод для этого.”
"Klavdiya, ведут себя. И Джами не владеет русским языком.”
Klavdiya looks between Katelyn and Jami briefly then smiles, shaking her head.
“You and your American raising. In Mother Russia, women would date long time before considering marriage.”
“Well, I don’t think Mother Russia looks kindly on our kind of marriage.”
“Eh, little problem to be solved with time. Of that I am sure.”
“You’re right, baby girl. I like her already.”
“I knew you would.” Kate bounces a little in place as she tosses her arms around Klavdiya. Klavdiya embraces Kate as well. “It wasn’t the same not seeing you answer the door at my parents’ house. It was something I really looked forward to showing Jami, the elegance and strength you presented to our visitors.”
“Ha, simple concepts for even simpler minds. But you девушка, you have shown greater strength than even I.”
Kate pulls away slowly, looking at the elderly woman with a sense of confusion. “What do you mean?”
“I watch you on TV here. I see you and Jami had big victory over the two women last time. I knew you date this one, but when did you decide to marry?”
“It was a recent decision based on some… unfortunate events.”
“That sounds like story for another time.”
“I hope there will be another time to share it with you.”
“There will be plenty of time. This болезнь will only make me stronger. Like movie you like so much. Old man with blue lightsword.”
Kate and Jami both smile, with Jami actually snorting a little bit. “That’s Star Wars, Klavdiya.”
“Ah yes, indeed. And you will become stronger to. I feel it in old Klavdiya’s bones. Whatever they throw at you, you will преодолеть.”
“Thank you Klavdiya.”
Kate holds Klavdiya's hand as Klavdiya smiles between the two girls from her bed. Klavdiya looks at Kate again.
“девушка, could you give moment to Jamilyn and myself, please?”
“Um... okay. Is everything”
“Please девушка, no argument. I want to speak with her alone.”
Kate looks a little shocked but lets go of Klavdiya's hand. Before she leaves she gives a quick kiss to Jami.
“I'll be in the waiting room.”
“Okay sweetheart, I love you.” Kate leaves the room, but as she steps out of sight she pins herself against the wall to remain in earshot. She has to wait a few seconds before she hears speaking.
"What is it you wish of me, ma'am?"
“I want you to know how happy I am that my девушка has found someone she is so devoted to. I love her dearly and because you are so close to her you must know something. The boy Lucas knows already. Those closest to her should know, but Katelyn must never know.”
“Katelyn, is everything alright?”
Kate jumps a little but it looks like neither Jami nor Klavdiya heard Iosif speaking to her. “Iosif, has your mother ever been a secret keeper?”
“Loads of times. I remember back in grade school when the teacher asked for a homework assignment that I hadn’t finished, my mother actually called in right at that moment to say that I had left it at home by mistake and that I would have to turn it in tomorrow. Needless to say she wasn’t happy later. Why though?”
“She’s talking to Jami alone and just before you walked up she said it was something about me. Something that I wasn’t supposed to know.”
“If my mother says it, there’s probably a reason.”
“You’re probably right, but what would be so fucking devastating that she wouldn’t feel that I could handle it?”
So hey everybody watch out because we got a couple of badasses over there. I mean, I really get it, these are a couple people who take the business very seriously. And I really do mean, very seriously. Like as serious as a Chinese gold farmer on a WoW server. Oh sorry, that’s probably racist. As serious as the stripper trying to work her way through college. No that would be a bad role model.
Jami and I may not exactly be the people to look up to when it comes to our overall choices. I mean, I’m willing to admit to my faults because Goddesses of Hyrule know I have plenty of them. But when you two run your mouths off like a couple of spoiled kids about the “state of the business” or whatever your fucking problem is with a couple of girls who also happen to be gamers, and lesbians, and living and loving with other consenting adults, there’s some serious issues here. We won’t even get into the political aspects, let’s just stick to the personal way that Saint City Affinity decided to come after Casa De Kami and why exactly it was the biggest fucking mistake that you two have made in your careers.
Okay yea, Rebecca, Tyron, you’ve both kinda made points in your own ways so let’s make one thing extremely clear here: Jami and I are just as serious as you two about this business. The difference is we don’t let it consume our every thought. And maybe you didn’t notice but we kicked the crap out of two people that we kinda consider friends. So just think if we’re that serious against friends in the ring, imagine how we are against people who talk shit to us just for the shit talk. You think that all we do is go around sleeping with the girls in our house and then run back to our games right after. Yea, tell that to the regulation gym built into our basement. We don’t come to these things just to flaunt our stuff. We can do that anywhere anytime we wanted if we chose to.
But we don’t, not just because we’d be in jail each and every time, but we actually do have self-respect and self-esteem. Something you two seem to have lost somewhere along the way. I mean Rebecca, where do you get off comparing anything to racism? We aren’t going out and going GTA on a bunch of… insert stereotyped group here. I’m as colorblind as playing a Call of Duty multiplayer. I don’t care who’s on my team or who’s on the enemy team. You’re an enemy, I shoot you dead. You’re an ally, I’ll assist you best I can. No fucks given about anything other than that line alone. And Rebecca, you are walking the line of really pissing me off. And yet, you know what I couldn’t help but notice? All your words were directed at Jami or at Casa De Kami as a group, but nothing towards me. Now why is that? Oh wait, I know why because like the Borg would say I’m “irrelevant” right? Better check yourself girl, because I might be a gamer, but I don’t play games when I’m in that ring. You piss me off and I’ll put a boot in your face and show even the fucking KKK how similar we all are on the inside.
And then you Tyron, you are everything to be despised in this world. And it's not because of what's between your legs, there isn't anyone in this match except maybe you and your partner who give a shit about that. No, you represent everything that I as a Jedi have sworn to fight against, but you had the balls to try and say we are the bad role models for younger girls. And what are the younger boys learning from you exactly? How to beat people up? Complain and whine because things aren't being run the way you want them run? That it’s fine and dandy to go off for no reason? What have we done to you or VoW exactly? You never said a damn thing about that. Just went on about Katie this and Katie that. Katie’s fallen on hard times, that part’s true. It would break anyone, even and especially you. Oh yea, you’re a breaker, Tyron, just as bad as what you claim to be so done with. If you were any kind of man, you’d deal with it. Hell, you’d take that opportunity and seize it, but you’re just as bad. You just bemoan that everything is so fucked up and how it's such a shame that people like us are even allowed to compete. But you've offered no solutions to it. Oh except kicking our asses apparently.
So if that’s what it is then I can’t really do much to change your minds with just these words. But Saint City Affinity is basically the epitome of reasons that people drop from this business. Because they can’t stand working with people like you who refuse to just let a good match be a damn good match. It’s not about what you have done, it’s what you’re doing right now and that’s the point you’re missing out on. Just like any shooter game, you could kill streak for half the game, but what good is it if you yourself are dying just as much as getting those streaks? So don’t tell Jami and I we can’t roll with you just because we have a different attitude about the business. Don’t even try to pin the negative stereotypes when you yourselves are full of them. Stones in glass houses bitches. That’s where you two stand.
So after Breakthrough, win or lose, Casa De Kami at least will have the pride of knowing we didn’t have to stoop to your levels to get our point across. Saint City Affinity will never be able to claim that and I hope that somewhere deep down you two realize this just as much. Casa De Kami is shooting for the top and we’ll do what it takes to make sure that we get there the right way. The way that would accept everyone who has a love for this business no matter what they’re other activities might be.
