The night of the engagement party, everyone had gone home (Even Kat was gone visiting with friends for a few days) and everything was cleaned up. Therefore, it was quiet for the first time in hours. Zoey had done a fair deal of cleaning and general house work having sent Ariel and Holly to their room to relax, little had she realized in what capacity they were. Candi, on the other hand, was outside playing around with the waves giving chase and retreating over and over again. Her legs, by the time she was brought in, had become as wet as Zoey’s eyes. Not that she had spent her time without her fiance crying over her being gone, she had only dozed off for an hour and was now forcing herself to keep awake to make certain everything was settled. Candi was the final piece before a peaceful sleep. It wouldn’t be too hard, just get the bubbly blond locked away in her cage and things would be fine. But in this newfound light, being this close to Candi without Kat’s presence and that of a leash, it allowed her to see a little something on Candi she hadn’t quite before. A pair of scars over her right shoulder, one vertical crossing over a horizontal one shaping out to a crucifix it seemed.
Zahara: Candi,
The magician begins as she lets go of the blonde’s hand turning completely toward her.
Zahara: How did you get that?
Not that Zoey was accusing anyone she knew. The scars had clearly been there a long while, long enough to heal over at least. Long enough that Candi’s movement was no longer hindered by them. Long enough that even Cand could forget they were even there.
Candi: My bikini? I went the shop and bought it. Did you wanna try it on, Magical Mistress?
The seeming lack of focus and mental acuity on Candi used to bother Zoey a little bit, but now she found it kind of charming. Candi was a lot more honest and observant than people gave her credit for. She just… had her own special brand of delivery. And who could find fault in a person who looked so happy most of the time?
Zahara: No, sweetie… I mean the scar on your shoulder.
She reached out, softly touching the faint scar tissue before setting her palm on the girl’s shoulder as a whole and giving a little squeeze.
Candi: That’s easy! ‘Cause a guy in a funny mask had to go and make my muscles kissy and huggy again.
Candi giggles and then smiles warmly. Thinking over Candi’s words, Zoey nodded slightly and affected another smile.
Zahara: And why did the masked man have to do that, dear?
Candi: Because I got a major owie in my shoulder.
Candi replies sounding a little pained by it but having Zoey’s hand there certainly calms her down some back into smiling.
Candi: My brother, um, we were visiting this shore place and we went climbing. But it ended up being like this cliff place...and he was ‘bout to fall but I grabbed him.
She nods her head then, for a moment, looks like she might be thinking more on the story.
Candi: He was...bigger than. Bigger than me. My shoulder went all POP! But then my parents came and helped him up. Mommy said I was a guardian angel that day.
Zahara: Your mommy was right. You did a very brave thing, Candi. I know it was a long time ago, but I’m proud of you for that.
Zoey tugs the blonde into a big hug. Candi giggles hugging Zoey back even tighter right up to the moment of the embrace’s end.
Candi: Well, that’s what sisters gotta do. We gotta look out for brothers ‘cause they get in super so much trouble.
Candi gives off another giggle then looks around swiftly.
Candi: Where’s yours? Kitty Mistress says you gots one but I haven’t seen him around.
Zahara: My brother? He’s… well, he’s gone, Candi.
It would never not be a touchy subject. Zoey was to the point now where she could talk about him with a smile, focusing on the good times, but there’d always be a part of her heart that was missing where her brother should be. Candi notices the pained expression and instinctively wants to reach out and pat a hand over Zoey’s shoulder, show that she’s there. But she feels this calls for something a little more. Gone could mean several things, but in this case gone, judging by Zoey’s tone, meant gone-gone. Therefore, she bows her head and brings her hands together in front of her.
Candi: " Lord, you are Holy above all others, and all of the strength that she need is in your hands. I am not asking, Lord, that you take this trial away. Instead, I simply ask that Your will be done in her life. Whatever that means, that is what I want. But I admit that it's hard, Lord. Sometimes she feel like she can't go on. The pain and the fear are too much for her, and I know that she doesn't have the strength on her own to get through this. I know that I can come to you, Jesus, and that you will hear my prayer. I know that it is not your intent to bring her to this point just to leave her in the wilderness alone. Please, Lord, give her the strength that she needs to face today. She doesn't have to worry about tomorrow. If you just give her the strength that she needs today that is all she needs. Keep her from sinning during this trial. Instead, help her to keep her eyes on you. In Jesus' name. Amen."
One topic that never came up regularly around the house, Zoey noticed, was religion. She had a simple view of faith, instilled by her parents, that had served her well. When Candi launched into her prayer it caught the magician off-guard. She listened to the heartfelt words, watching a suddenly solemn Candi with something akin to awe. When she finished, Zoey spoke up quietly.
Zahara: I had no idea you were religious, Candi…
Candi: I’ve always been.
The blond returns as she slowly lowers her hands down to her sides and smiles.
Candi: Love and faith in the Lord is not something you show off to people, it’s just...something you keep in here.
Candi reaches out touching Zoey’s chest. Zoey is certain Candi means to press where her heart is, but instead she’s on the wrong side. Still, bless her heart for trying.
Candi: Right where He knows.
Zahara: That’s sort of how I see it and how my parents taught me about it. It doesn’t matter how much you go to church or how loudly you proclaim your faith. That doesn’t make near as much difference as people think. It’s in how you live your life every day. The small acts of kindness, the smiles for a stranger, being honest and hard-working… those are the things that matter and help to make the world better even if it’s just for one person at a time. Living well honors the Lord by ensuring that his sacrifice wasn’t in vain. My father could tell that better than I, but I know you understand.
With a smile, Zoey moved Candi’s hand as they talked, showing her where the heart was in actuality. When she finished, she stepped in and embraced her fiancee’s lion, hugging her close.
Zahara: Thank you, Candi. That really meant a lot to me.
Candi giggles and once more embraces Zoey for a tight bear, er, lion hug.
Candi: So you wanna play stuffed aminals?
Zahara: Can you get dressed first?
Candi looks down still seeing herself in her swim attire and giggles.
Candi: Oh yeah!
She turns and skips off down the hall to find a change of clothes as Zoey turns and glances out the kitchen window silently for a moment. She then smiles and flicks off the light.
Zahara: Candi,
