Friday late morning/early-afternoon-ish…
So much happens in just the span of a few days. It was a week ago that Kate had received several notices of bad news. Her own father, a man she was no longer close to had passed, but so had her “adopted” mother, the wife of her new tag team partner and father to her former tag team partner, the legendary JMC. And speaking of her former tag team partner, she had been assaulted heavily at the last Breakthrough and was forced to bow out of the competitive part of this business. This had practically brought Kate to a brink of depression, but she had to keep going no matter her own feelings. She’d have to deal with them another way one day, but for now she had other concerns on her mind. Jami’s health had drastically improved but past conditions still made it impossible for her to return and so the world famous “Geekette Extraordinaire” had bid adieu to the last shards of Casa De Kami in existence. In its place though a new force had risen. The dark impulses of JMC and the undying light of Cali-Kate had taken a form that was unexpected, but clearly something that would be both feared and respected.
Before that could happen they had a huge task ahead of them in the form of Winter Pine and Matthew Robinson. Kate was only too aware of the danger that both competitors presented in a one-on-one match, but together, as Animal Instinct they were a tough match.
“Sweetie, it’s your turn.”
Kate snapped from her reverie as we find that the “Geekette Extraordinaire” has a putt-putt club in her hands. Today she is with her girlfriend, Destiny Cornett, and her two best friends, her former lover and former partner Jamilyn Cornett and her new beau recognized by all VoW viewers as Tyler Storm. They are at a mini golf course and while Jami cares for the two infants in a stroller, Kate walks up and pulls a pink golf ball out of her pocket. Lining up a shot she putts it down, but it drops down a valley just away from the hole.
“Ah, fu-uuuhh, ah come on.”
“Yea, you better watch your mouth around these two.”
“Play nice you two or I’ll put you both in time out.”
“Don’t threaten me with a good time babe.”
Kate and Destiny both giggle and go to where their golf balls have both ironically come to a rest almost right next to each other.
“Looks like yours found mine.”
“Irony at its finest.”
Destiny wraps an arm around Kate who leans in against her. Despite the fact that Destiny is younger than Kate, Destiny is taller which lends to a little bit of a mind blown type of deal if one just looks from the outside of this particular relationship.
“Something on your mind, Pikachu?”
“Yea, I mean I guess. There’s just been so much shit in the last week and we’re still no closer to finding out who got my father’s hedgefund operations. This guy is like a ghost or something.”
“Dad’s put a few more resources into it. We’re gonna find this guy. But seriously, baby girl, why does it matter if you don’t care about that business?”
“Because there’s a reason my father didn’t want this guy running the business. And if the rumors are true and I have a half-brother out there, then I need to know why the…” she pauses making sure the kids are still with Jami and Tyler back at the start of the course. Tyler has just putt the ball himself. “...why the fuck I didn’t know about it until now. Sure secrets were a thing my dad did well. He had to in his line of work, but this is not anywhere close to the same.”
“Kacey, maybe that’s not something you’re ready for. Obviously your dad didn’t think so. And he may have been a jerk, but Jami told me the story. He was trying to protect you.”
“Yea, that’s the story everyone’s going with. Don’t get me wrong, I’m glad Jami help repair things between me and mom, but dad was never going to accept that I wasn’t going to do as he wanted me to.”
“I guess that’s true. I mean I never met him so…"
Kate lightly kisses Destiny. “Trust me that’s something I’m grateful for.”
Jami putts her ball down as Tyler pushes the stroller to meet up with the rest of them. Kate backs away from Destiny so she can take her shot and when Jami comes back to the stroller, Tyler walks around to stand with Kate.
“Hey, you and Destiny looked to be in a pretty intense discussion.”
“It’s nothing. Just some personal shit.”
Tyler flicks Kate in the ear. “I don’t like it when you lie to me. Or to Jami.”
“What? I haven’t lied to Jami. What the f-”
“It’s more than personal shit you’re talking about with Destiny and you’ve been distant from Jami recently.”
“I doubt the two issues are related. There’s just some shit going on in my life with my dad’s death and his company. I bet Destiny has already let Jami in on it anyway. So seriously dude, don’t even.”
“Alright, I trust you, but you know she worries about you still.”
Kate frowns a little, walking up after Destiny manages to putt her ball into the hole. Jami gets Remi to clap while Elena watches and imitates the clapping. Kate walks up and after a little while putts her ball as well. It stops just short of the hole. Tyler is up next and takes his shot, sinking it with ease. He walks back to Kate.
“So the other night…”
“Yea.”
“I just wanted to ask if you were okay. I mean how are you considering… everything.”
Kate smiles and shakes her head, rolling her eyes. “I’m fine Tyler. It doesn’t hurt as much. And I want to thank you as well. For just helping me understand a little more why she chose you.”
“I make a pretty convincing argument, don’t I?”
“God yes. And I want you to know I have never once lied about being happy for you and Jami. Just now, I think I understand it much better.”
“I just want you to keep in mind what I told you. And for fuck’s sakes, keep in touch with Jami more. She does miss you.”
Kate and Jami hadn’t done much talking, at least not one-on-one, since the attack and JMC’s announcement to take over as Kate’s partner. For her part, Kate didn’t feel betrayed by Jami, but hurt that Jami had simply given in so easily. It was uncharacteristic, but Kate knew all the reasons why she did it. Didn’t stop the hurt in Kate though and after Jami took her shot and made it into the hole, Kate’s was the only ball that hadn’t gotten in. Jami walks over to the two infants.
“Watch Auntie Kate now and get ready.”
Not that they understood really, but the spirit of the idea was enough to bring a smile to Kate’s face and do a show off pose with a silly face as she tapped the ball into the hole. Recovering it, she walks up to Jami who’s getting the two to cheer for Kate. Kate smiles and gives a hug to Jami who’s taken aback a little, but soon returns it with a smile.
“You okay, Katelyn?”
Kate shakes her head with a smile. “No, and I don’t think I ever will be. But that’s no excuse for me to ruin everyone else’s day with a stupid frown.” Kate turns to the infants. “Remember a frown should always be turned upside down. Because that is when you smile and everyone likes to smile.” She nods at them and turns back to Jami who grins.
“My dad’s gonna be the best replacement for me you can ask for. You just watch and let him prove me right.”
“He will take your place, but he’s not replacing you Michaeleigh. He even agreed with me, well kinda, about how my heart may not be in it anymore.”
“That doesn’t sound like dad.”
“That was when he gave me one of his infamous tough love speeches. It was right before we went on stage at Dragoncon. Basically said, if I wasn’t gonna be in it, then I shouldn’t even bother going on to that stage.”
“That sounds a little better.” Tyler and Destiny have already moved to the next hole and Jami and Kate are soon walking up behind them. “Look, you’re gonna do fine. It’s your spirit that got Casa De Kami the shot that you and dad are now taking. I should be the one hurting because I’m not getting that opportunity.”[/font]
“No, you just got the best consolation prize ever.”
“I’d say you picked up some pretty good rewards yourself.”
They both look to Tyler and Destiny who are talking and laughing about something that Jami and Kate can’t quite hear.
“We both did. We both got some pretty epic loot.”
She doesn’t deserve the shot. She didn’t do shit for it. She hasn’t been the one working her ass off for it. Not like a bunch of other people in VoW. Certainly not like two people like Winter Pine and Matthew Robinson.
You didn’t think I was talking about Katie did you?
I hear the whispers. They’re kept even quieter though because I’m not making the same fuss. But everyone sees the matches of Casa De Kami and they remember Jami’s actions. They also remember how Jami was the one taken out of action and where was her partner in all of it? Doing nothing but looking like a fat ass lump in the ring just crying over her fallen partner. Cali-Kate should just drop it right now.
I’ve got a message for all of you keeping your opinions in the dark: that’s exactly where they fucking belong. Because I’m not down or out, not anywhere close to it and these uber fools calling themselves Animal Instinct. A bunch of bullshit is all I see. What Matt, did you run out of original statements? You had to go on about my partner’s sexuality and my gaming? As if that had ANY effect on our ability. Or as Pokemon might put it, your words aren’t very effective. You see Mattie there isn’t anything more dangerous than two people who have everything to prove and nothing to lose. That’s where me and James are right now. Not to mention I’m still pissed off from Jami getting attacked and right now it’s you and Winter in my path. So you can make all the cracks you want that James and I aren’t ready, but you don’t have a fucking clue what James and I can do together.
Then there’s Winter. Yea she’s a scary bitch. But she’s been having a lot of trouble lately. Having trouble getting that momentum lately? Got it from from my good friend Z at Heatstroke, then fell to Death herself at the last Breakthrough. And now you’ve got not just one mega-evolved “Geekette Extraordinaire” but you have the original FinalHazard himself. Basically, it isn’t looking good for you no matter how you look at this game. We’re fresh and ready. You’ve been handed two losses in matches that would have made all the difference in your career. Oh yes, Winter, I’ve been watching how you operate. You’re a scary bitch, but you don’t scare me. I’m not just a geek, I’m a Jedi and at Breakthrough you and Mattie will see just how much a couple weeks of preparation for this specific match gets for me and James.
This is not just some PUG that got thrown together at the last minute, we’re so much more. We are Chaotic Light. And we are the new standard in VoW after we’ve dealt with Animal Instinct. This is the beginning of our time. See you at Breakthrough.
