Prologue
Placing my Bible, the last and most important article that I will require, neatly into my large red suitcase I glare at its luxurious cover as a moment silently passes.
My mind is made up.
Quickly I close the case, taking care to ensure that none of the items inside are caught up in its zipper.
My bag is packed.
Grabbing the handle, I lift the rather heavy case off of my bed and turn towards the door.
Perhaps though I care not for goodbyes it would be best if I told Paxar and my sisters that I am leaving. After all it could be a very long time before I return, before I see them again.
For a second I stare at the door, before shaking off that particular notion.
No, it is better to do this quietly. I am not sure that they would understand, Paxar especially, that this is something that I must do. Something that I must do alone.
Just as I attempt to take a step to the door, the door unexpectedly swings open and in bursts an excited Paxar holding a DVD case in her hand.
“Guess who just scored the complete series of Firefly on DVD for like ten bucks...this girl that’s who!” Paxar announces joyfully, her happiness quickly turning into a look of curiosity and a raised eyebrow as she notices the bag in my hand. “...Going somewhere?”
“As a matter of fact, I am,” I tell her truthfully, stepping past her through the doorway. “My flight leaves in a couple of hours. My taxi should be here shortly to take me to the airport.”
“So you’re just going to up and leave, is that it?” Paxar questions, her tone of voice filled with hints of both perplexion and anger. “Leave VOW, your friends, your sisters...turning your back on all of them without so much as an adios?”
Taking a deep breath, I glare into the wounded, chestnut eyes of my friend. “The Lord is calling me, Paxar. The people in Liberia affected by this Ebola virus...they need me. I must help them in any way that I can, I must go…”
Beginning to head up the stairs, I hear the voice of Paxar yelling from behind me.
“AND YOU WEREN’T EVEN GOING TO TELL US!!!”
