Dathyn Vs. Joanna Thade
Axel Reid: Well we’re going to start our festivities here in Cardiff with a match putting one-half of the VoW Twin City Champions, Judas Dathyn, against the re-debuting Joanna Thade, who as far as we can tell has made some positive changes to her life.
Ruby Parvati: You mean Joanna “goody-two-shoes” Thade? Yeah, I can see her REALLY changing for the better…
Axel Reid: So you don’t think Joanna can stay on the good path, Ruby?
Ruby Parvati: I just think being a little menacing and unpredictable is much more fun, Axel. Clearly Joanna wants to go the boring route, and I blame her interaction with Matt Slater for that. He defines boring, and it’s not helping her at all.
Axel Reid: I don’t think he’s boring. I actually think he’s pretty great. But it’s funny you should mention Slater, Ruby, because we just got word a few minutes ago that something interesting happened before the start of our show tonight. We have the footage cued up for those who are watching at home right now, courtesy of our Backstage Interviewer Darius Yates.
Ruby Parvati: Ooo, I wonder what juicy scoops he picked up? I can’t wait to find out!
Axel Reid: According to Darius he spotted… well, it’ll be best to show you. Here’s what happened outside the arena earlier tonight.
With a transitional wave, the view of Axel and Ruby at the commentary table changes to that of Darius Yates staring directly at us, dressed in a fine suit and being recorded by his fellow cameraman somewhere in the backstage area. It appears to be a desolate corridor with equipment cases lining the walls, but an emergency exit is directly behind him, partly open for some inexplicable reason.
Darius, without much delay, raises his personal microphone to his lips and begins to speak enthusiastically.
Darius Yates: Ladies and gentleman my name is Darius Yates, and right now I am fully prepared to give you an exclusive interview with someone I have been meaning to talk to for a number of weeks. He is currently standing outside in the parking lot directly behind me, and hopefully he’ll still be there by the time we reach him. This should be quite the exciting interview, and I’m sure I’ll have plenty more for you to watch at your leisure directly from the Visionaries of Wrestling website. And in case you guys are wondering, there has been no sign of the two hooded figures that interrupted our Main Event in Belfast. Hopefully they don’t make an appearance tonight. Let’s go!
Signalling the cameraman to follow him, Darius hastily approaches the emergency exit and pushes the door further open. As the cameraman gets a better view beside Darius, we get the scene of the parking lot, lit up by artificial lighting that gives the location a distinct orange hue. Standing out there is a winter-dressed Matt Slater, talking on the phone as he stands beside a parked car.
Darius Yates: I’m sure he won’t mind the interruption if we’re nice enough…
Taking the risk, Darius briskly walks outside as the cameraman follows. As they near Slater’s position, the microphones in Darius’ hand and the one integrated into the camera pick up his private conversation.
Matt Slater: Listen, Amy, nothing bad is going to happen to me. As far as Robinson is concerned, he’s not going to intimidate me, and neither will the whereabouts of those two people in hooded cloaks… of course I’m going to watch my back… okay… alright, I’ll speak to you later. Don’t worry about me, okay? You take care.
As soon as Slater finishes his phone-call - a sight that Darius treats as a convenience - Darius makes his presence aware to The Silver Knight.
Darius Yates: Mr Slater?
Adjusting the strap of his bag on his shoulder, Slater turns and looks at Darius.
Darius Yates: I apologize for the sudden interruption, but I just wanted to say, it really is good to see you again in VoW.
Darius extends his hand for a handshake, which Slater humbly accepts.
Matt Slater: Thank you, Darius. You’re looking pretty good yourself.
Darius Yates: Fresh and proper! Anyway, I was wondering if it was okay to get a quick interview with you, something exclusive for the fans to watch at home?
Darius points to the camera, which Slater briefly acknowledges.
Matt Slater: I don’t see why not.
Darius Yates: Great! Well, okay, Here’s my first question. How do you think things have gone so far since you decided to come out of retirement and wrestle once again?
Matt Slater: I have to say, the moment I came out to wrestle my match at Armed and Dangerous, the reception I got from those fans in Thunder Bay made my choice worth it. Coming back from retirement was a hard decision for me to make, but I truly believe that I made--
?: NO! I SHOULDN’T…. I will be good, GAH!
Suddenly, both Slater and Darius are taken aback by a feminine scream of frustration. As they look towards the source of the noise, the cameraman quickly locates a disturbed Joanna Thade, frantically searching through an equipment case.
Darius Yates: Hold on, ladies and gentleman, I’ve just…
Matt Slater: Darius…
Having heard the seriousness of Slater’s voice, the cameraman points the camera back at them.
Matt Slater: I don’t think it would be appropriate for you to rush over there and flood her with questions. Let me handle this situation. We can do an interview later.
Reluctantly, Darius nods.
Darius Yates: I’ll respect your wishes, Mr Slater. I hope she’s okay.
Slater then looks directly at the cameraman and not the camera itself.
Matt Slater: And I’d like you to go too. Please don’t record this. Switch it off and go.
The cameraman audibly mutters something, doing so as Darius guides him away from Slater and Joanna Thade. However, as Darius disappears into the building, the cameraman seems to have a change of heart. We hear him adjusting dials on the expensive camera as he moves into a safe hiding spot, making sure he isn’t seen. Eventually he aims the camera at Slater as he approaches Joanna, who is now sat on the case in annoyance. With the audio levels increased, the camera seems to pick up their seemingly-private conversation, with both of them having no knowledge of the cameraman’s presence.
Matt Slater: Joanna? Is everything okay?
Slater puts his bag down and leans on the equipment case, attempting to make Joanna feel comfortable so that she does not break down.
Joanna Thade: I’m struggling Slater. My princess tore out my heart and I want to rip Dathyn to pieces after what he said. But I can’t, I... I have to be good. As much as there are plenty of tools in this box to help, I know better. Gah... why is this so hard?
Joanna stares at the floor as her ankle meets the case with a passive thud. Meanwhile Slater raises his arm, being hesitant to do something. After a short while he places his hand on Joanna’s shoulder.
Matt Slater: You’ve become accustomed to malicious violence, Joanna. You don’t feel the same without it. But I feel… in fact I know... that you have the will-power to overcome this. You don’t need to use weapons anymore, Joanna. You don’t need to follow the instructions of your… vicious peers. You have the skills to beat Dathyn without giving in to that lifestyle.
Swinging her legs, Joanna looks at Slater, and nods. Taking a deep breath Joanna pushes off the case and stands next to Slater.
Joanna Thade: You’re right. I’m just scared with all this noise in my head and it being my first match. I need to remember what got me to this dance, not the past ones. Being the better person, even if it means losing a few teeth.
Joanna smiles at Slater before giving him a quick hug. Although taken aback slightly, Slater accepts the hug.
Joanna Thade: Now where’s catering? I’m craving an apple before I force one down Dathyn’s throat. It’ll keep the doctor away if I remember the saying correctly.
Matt Slater: It should do. Let’s go inside and get warm.
Once Slater and Joanna begin to walk towards the rear exit, the cameraman hastily lowers the camera and switches off the recording. We then transition back to Axel and Ruby at the commentary table.
Axel Reid: So you see, Ruby, Joanna is trying to be good after all.
Ruby Parvati: Oh come on, Axel. Did you see how much she was struggling? This nice facade she’s putting on won’t last long, and Slater will get egg on his face for helping her instead of chunks of apple.
Axel Reid: But the question is, can Joanna succeed against Dathyn? We’ll find out in a few moments!
The arena goes black as a single spotlight cascades down onto the ramp. The lights stay off as Emma Browning's "Sweet Dreams” plays throughout the arena. About thirty seconds into the song, Dathyn walks out, wearing a sweatshirt with the hood up, a Bo staff on his back and one of the Twin City Championships around his waist. Dathyn continues towards the ring, paying very little attention to the fans.
Jerry Heisenberg: Ladies and gentleman this opening contest is scheduled for one fall! Introducing first, he stands 6’2” and weighed in tonight at 195lbs… he is one half of the VoW Twin City Champions, representing The Cut-Throat Corps… DATHYN!!!
Axel Reid: I’ll just say this, Ruby. Dathyn is a man that chose the dark path and never looked back. That’s the difference between him and Joanna. Joanna wants to escape that path, whereas Dathyn… well, he embraces it, just like his partner Cera.
Ruby Parvati: And he’s become successful because of that choice! First he wins the VoW Twin City Championships with Cera, and then he pins Patrick Jones in a Tag Team Match also featuring Matt Slater! His motives are clear, and they are helping him greatly.
When the 'screaming' in the music occurs, the lights begin frantically flashing, but then default after. Dathyn walks up the steps and jumps over the ropes before standing on the ring ropes and taking off his hood, staring into the distance. He then takes a coin out of his pocket and flips it before cracking a grin and taking a knee.
Axel Reid: This man, without question, is a technical marvel… but he is also sinister. When you have the skills to defeat pretty much anyone, and accompany that with a vicious mean-streak, you have a deadly combination that your opponents will struggle with.
Ruby Parvati: As Joanna will once she steps into that ring… unless she takes that path most travelled and plays Dathyn at his own twisted game.
Once Dathyn stands up and re-pockets the coin, the lights darken once again with a low rumble. The rumble builds until the explosion of sound occurs, cuing the emergence of Joanna from behind the curtain as “New Perspective” by Fireflight plays. Using the opening riffs to energize the crowd Joanna takes center stage, jumping in place and looking around.
Jerry Heisenberg: And his opponent… she stands at 5’4” and weighed in tonight at 145lbs… JOANNA THADE!!!
Joanna skips down the ramp as the lyrics resonate from the speakers, making a point to give as many high fives as she can until she reaches the ring steps. There she holds her hand to her forehead and looks out among the crowd with each mention of “a new perspective”.
Ruby Parvati: Look at that showmanship. It makes me sick…
Axel Reid: She’s turned a new leaf, Ruby. As her song clearly states, it’s a new perspective.
Ruby Parvati: Well the perspective I have is sickening. She should still be someone like Dathyn. But I have a feeling she’ll go back to that road in due time.
Once on the ring apron Joanna springboards into the ring and encourages the crowd until the ref moves her to the corner to await the bell.
Axel Reid: So you give her no hope of succeeding?
Ruby Parvati: Not when you’re against Dathyn with that attitude, and not when you can do so much better and have more fun being a vicious little monster.
Axel Reid: When did you suddenly approve of that behaviour?
Ruby Parvati: We’re close to Halloween, Axel. Plus I’m entertained by that stuff.
The referee signals for the bell after Dathyn puts his championship belt away.
DING DING DING!!!
As soon as she hears the bell, Joanna straightens up and exhales, keeping a close-eye on Dathyn as one-half of the Cut-Throat Corps stalks her from afar in a technical wrestling stance.
Axel Reid: So here we go. Joanna Thade is making a fresh start here in VoW, and Dathyn is dead-set on continuing his winning streak that has been with him since the summer.
Uncharacteristically, Joanna opts to remain distant from Dathyn, although she keeps her hands up with a side-step stance. Dathyn slides towards Joanna’s legs, but Joanna steps away, immediately following up with a swinging kick that Dathyn leans back from. The two competitors return to their respective stances, wanting to anticipate the other’s next move. This time it’s Joanna who rushes forward with a direct punch, but Dathyn masterfully side-steps her arm, grabs it and throws her over with a Judo-style Hip Toss.
Axel Reid: Dathyn taking the early advantage… but he’s not going to capitalize as Joanna rolls towards the ropes.
Ruby Parvati: As if those ropes are going to help her against him. He knows all the tricks of the trade.
Despite having all the time in the world to do something, Dathyn still manages to get stung by a chop from Joanna! The crowd cheer as Joanna connects another chop, but suddenly Dathyn grabs her after the second one and throws her to the canvas with a Belly-to-Belly! Joanna groans from the impact, but she seems to take the punishment well, standing back up without a problem… until Dathyn floors her yet again with an Exploder Suplex!
Ruby Parvati: Look at those suplexes, Axel. Joanna is not going to last long at all!
Axel Reid: I think you’re underestimating how much she can take. Remember, Joanna has taken so much punishment in hardcore matches that she’s become accustomed to the pain.
Ruby Parvati: But she has her limits, as everyone does.
Going for a third suplex, Dathyn successfully takes Joanna over with a Double Arm variation. After this he goes for a cover, with the referee being right on the mark…
ONE!
TW--
Joanna gets her far shoulder up, breaking the cover just after the count of two. Dathyn looks a little agitated, but his expression is one of comfort, knowing he still has the clear advantage at this point. Picking Joanna up, Dathyn grabs her in a side headlock, keeping her under his control as the crowd boo his dominance.
Ruby Parvati: Why are these Welsh people booing mastery? It’s not Dathyn’s fault they don’t know what being good at something is. That’s why they were eliminated from the Rugby World Cup!
Axel Reid: You’ve been watching that?
Ruby Parvati: Not really. I made a note of their failure just in case.
In the meantime, Joanna is trying hard to get out of Dathyn’s headlock. Suddenly, Joanna grabs Dathyn’s hand and opens her mouth-wide, bearing clear white teeth that seem primed to bite down onto his flesh! That’s when she pauses, and as her expression changes, we see that she is struggling to not give in. Eventually she digs her nails into Dathyn’s hand and closes her mouth, but this only results in Dathyn swinging her over with a Headlock Takedown.
Axel Reid: It looked like Joanna was going to bite Dathyn’s hand then, but she didn’t do it!
Ruby Parvati: Goody-two-shoes, once again…
Feeling her lower spine, Joanna gets back to her feet, but Dathyn harshly chops her once she stands up. After this, Dathyn whips her to the ropes and takes her down with a pendulum backbreaker from the rebound, causing Joanna to arch her back in agony!
Axel Reid: Backbreaker from Dathyn, and there’s another cover!
Dathyn shoves Joanna down and makes the cover before the referee counts!
ONE!
TWO!
TH--NO!
Joanna kicks out yet again!
Axel Reid: There’s the tenacity of Joanna Thade! Years of abuse and bloodshed have kept her strong, despite that being a past she’d sooner forget about than to relive.
This time Dathyn scowls, beginning to show cracks in his composed state. Picking Joanna up yet again, Dathyn deals a hard knee before he follows up with another chop. The crowd boo as Dathyn whips Joanna into the corner, at which point he takes the coin out of his pocket yet again.
Axel Reid: What is he doing now?
Dathyn flips the coin and sees the result in his palm. With a smirk, he pockets the coin… only to muster a face of fury and sprint towards Joanna! He dives at her with a pointed knee raised, aiming to crush her head between the turnbuckle pad and his knee… but Joanna dodges the attack, not even seeing Dathyn’s knee collide with the buckle instead!
Ruby Parvati: Damn, he missed!
Axel Reid: He sure did! That coin flip may have inadvertently given Joanna the chance to get the advantage in this match!
Dathyn grabs his knee and winces, now hobbling around as he tries to repair the damage quickly. Seeing the predicament he’s in, Joanna goes right to work on the leg, hammering Dathyn with kicks to the knee and thigh! As the crowd cheer her on, Joanna gets a little distance before she aims a straight kick at Dathyn’s stomach… but Dathyn grabs her foot with his hands and shakes his head!
Ruby Parvati: Now what, Joanna? Now what?
Looking furious again, Dathyn swings her around on one leg, now facing her back before he grasps her for a German Suplex. As he powers Joanna up, she tries to roll forward to counter the suplex, but Dathyn’s grip is steadfast, causing Joanna to quickly stop her fall with her hands. Now balanced only on her hands and being held up by the waist from Dathyn, Joanna can only let Dathyn throw her up upwards… at which point Joanna grabs Dathyn’s head, swings her legs out and plants Dathyn on his face with a Bulldog!
Axel Reid: What a counter! Joanna gave Dathyn a Bulldog right out of that German Suplex!
Ruby Parvati: So Lady Luck is playing favourites tonight? We’ll see how that goes…
Dathyn is up before Joanna can even think of pinning him, but Dathyn makes the mistake of rushing into a snap Arm Drag from the reformed Thade! Dathyn hastily gets back to his feet and tries again, but Joanna gets off another Arm Drag, following it up with a Dropkick as Dathyn recovers from the throw!
Axel Reid: This is not lady luck working now, Ruby! This is Joanna at her finest, despite her lack of experience!
Grabbing Dathyn’s legs, Joanna rolls over his body and rests her weight on him with a Jackknife bridge, keeping Dathyn’s shoulders down as the referee counts the cover!
ONE!
TWO!
Dathyn forces Joanna off his body and simultaneously kicks out before the count of three. Joanna, even with having a damaged spine, grabs Dathyn’s arm and twists her legs around it as he remains on the mat, eventually flipping over and rolling Dathyn into a cradle! The referee counts again!
ONE!
TWO!
Dathyn lifts his shoulders up and shoves Joanna away from him for another kick-out!
Ruby Parvati: Why does Joanna think she can keep Dathyn down with pinfall attempts? He knows how to get out of them.
For a third time Joanna goes for a pinfall variant, this time sitting on Dathyn’s shoulders and rolling forward to pull him into a predicament. But Dathyn is wise to her scheme and blocks being rolled over, instead kneeling on her arms for his own pinfall attempt!
ONE!
TWO!
THR-- NO!
Somehow Joanna gets her shoulder up, even with Dathyn’s weight advantage!
Ruby Parvati: Do you see what I mean?
Axel Reid: Joanna kicked out though.
Ruby Parvati: Lady Luck again...
As soon as both of them stand up, Dathyn goes for another chop, but Joanna blocks it and nails Dathyn with a straight right hand! Dathyn feels his jaw before Joanna peppers him with more punches, doing so as the crowd cheer on her fighting spirit!
Axel Reid: And this is what Joanna is known for, her brawling antics! She may be a small woman, but those punches work a treat, as they’re doing to Dathyn!
Joanna mixes up her offensive flurry with kicks, giving Dathyn quite the beating as the Cardiff crowd enjoy the sight. However, Joanna goes to the well one too many times and Dathyn blocks a punch, giving Joanna a knee in the ribs for her trouble.
Ruby Parvati: Well that’s what happens when you try and square-off with a proficient MMA Fighter, as well as a Technical wrestler.
Shaking his head, Dathyn lunges a kick at Joanna’s head, but she grabs his foot a split-second before it meets her face! Suddenly, Joanna punches Dathyn behind the knee in the joint, resulting in him grabbing at his knee again. But instead of going to the knee again, Joanna grabs his arm and falls backwards, extending her leg under his chin and pulling him hard into the Jaw Dropper!
Axel Reid: Damn what a move! Joanna has Dathyn reeling again!
Unfortunately, Joanna seems to have a wicked gleam in her eyes. Ignoring Dathyn, Joanna focuses on the nearest corner, whereby she approaches the buckles and grabs the rope for the top one.
Axel Reid: Hold on… Joanna, what are you doing?
Ruby Parvati: I told you this would happen, Axel! You didn’t believe me!
The referee asks Joanna what she’s up to, and at that point Joanna stammers. With the rope in her hands Joanna trembles, beginning to shake her head and talk to herself. The crowd watch in confusion as Joanna yells, letting go of the rope and slamming her hand onto the padded buckle instead.
Axel Reid: It seems she overcame that… LOOK OUT!
As Joanna turns around, Dathyn comes flying at her with a Spear into the corner! Joanna folds over Dathyn’s shoulder from the impact, and a nearby camera captures the aggression on the face of one-half of the Cut-Throat Corps.
Ruby Parvati: Now she’s gone and done it.
Breathing heavily, Dathyn hoists Joanna up onto the top rope, seating her there before he nails her with an elbow! Joanna slumps to the side until Dathyn corrects her position and climbs up, seemingly going for a Superplex as he drapes her arm over his neck.
Ruby Parvati: The end is here, Axel. Lady Luck has disappeared!
To Ruby’s dismay, Joanna proves her wrong by hammering Dathyn in the ribs and stomach with a closed fist. As the referee counts how long they should be on the top rope for, Joanna resists the urge to scratch and claw Dathyn’s face off, instead pushing him off the ropes by the face. Dathyn manages to land on his feet, but it doesn’t last long as Joanna leaps off the top rope, landing on Dathyn’s shoulders and swinging him downward with The Undying Hurracanrana!
Axel Reid: Oh my! Dathyn was brought down directly onto his head!
Ruby Parvati: This… this cannot be happening...
With Dathyn lying prone on the mat, Joanna moves amongst the chorus of cheers, ascending the top rope and balancing herself on it, facing away from her opponent!
Axel Reid: Here comes a top rope Moonsault!
Finally executing the Top Rope Moonsault, Joanna rotates through the air… and lands on nothing but canvas! Dathyn moved at the last second, having recovered enough to dodge a match-ending bullet!
Axel Reid: No! Dathyn got away from the Moonsault, and Joanna is in trouble!
Grimacing from the impact, Joanna resides on her knees clutching her abdomen. Despite showing visible discomfort, Joanna forces herself up… only to get hit with a running boot from Dathyn into her stomach! Joanna collapses onto her knees again, but Dathyn quickly seizes the opportunity to do more damage and knees her upwards into a standing position! Joanna is about to collapse again, but Dathan grasps her jaw and chuckles... only to grab her head, twist around and slam her face-first onto his shoulder with A STUNNER!
Axel Reid: Whoa, what… what the hell was that?!
Ruby Parvati: That’s called a Stunner, Axel! You’ve seen it plenty of times before!
Axel Reid: But not from Dathyn! That took me by surprise!
With Joanna laid out from the Stunner, Dathyn goes for a tight cover! The referee counts!
ONE!
TWO!
THREE!!!
The referee signals for the bell!
DING DING DING!!!
Axel Reid: And that did it! Dathyn just defeated Joanna Thade with that Stunner, and I have to say… I was not expecting that!
Ruby Parvati: Unpredictability wins matches, Axel. Surprise your opponent and you’ll reap the benefits. But if Joanna had exposed that turnbuckle earlier… as she SHOULD have done… we could have had a very different outcome.
Jerry Heisenberg: Here is your winner... DATHYN!!!
“Sweet Dreams” by Emily Browning plays once again as Dathyn raises his arms in victory, smiling at yet another win on his growing streak. The crowd boo as Dathyn then demands his belt, and it’s not long before he is handed the Twin City Championship swiftly. Snatching the belt away from the referee, Dathyn raises it up proudly, receiving more boos before he looks down at Joanna, smirks callously and leaves the ring.
Axel Reid: You know what? I’m glad Joanna didn’t give in, Ruby. She never broke her promise. She might have lost tonight, but I think she earned respect for that. Not just from me, but from these fans here in Cardiff.
Ruby Parvati: Well if she wants to stay a goody-two-shoes, she better get used to losing then.
Axel Reid: What are you talking about? Joanna came close to winning this match a couple of times, and if she had hit that Moonsault, I think she could have beaten Dathyn.
Ruby Parvati: That’s wishful thinking in hindsight, Axel. I know who Joanna is, and soon she’ll realize who she is, and who she will always be.
Once Dathyn leaves the stage and his music fades away, a slightly-disorientated Joanna is given a round of applause from the crowd as she pushes herself up. She looks around as the cheers grow, only to muster one nod and look down disappointingly before the scene fades.
