The scene opens as I am sitting here in my hotel room in The Langham, located in the heart of downtown Chicago overlooking the Chicago River and Lake Michigan. Dressed in nothing but a pair of dark purple silk pyjama bottoms and a tight fitting black tank top, I’m trying my best to be happy on this road trip for Tayla, but I just can’t get over the fact that two days ago, my ex-husband came to visit and told me that he was moving back to England with our children, meaning my chances of ever seeing them again are essentially non-existent. I take a sip from my glass of red wine as Tayla enters the room from our bedroom, dressed in a pair of black high heeled shoes, a pair of dark blue denim jeans and a white Ramones T-shirt.
Stacy
I know I said we would be going out and having fun on this road trip Tayla, but after what happened, I just don’t have it in me to do anything...
She wraps her arms around me and kisses me softly on the cheek.
Tayla
It’s okay Stace, I understand...so what do you fancy for dinner? I’m going out to get us some take-out...
Stacy
I wouldn’t mind a Chinese actually, sweet and sour breaded chicken with egg fried rice...pass me my bag and I’ll give you some money for it...
Tayla
No need, it’s on me...it’s about time I treated you for once, especially during your time of need...
I manage a smile as I look into her big beautiful hazel coloured eyes as she reciprocates with a smile of her own.
Tayla
I won’t be long...
Stacy
Okay...
Tayla then picks up her light brown leather jacket and slips it on before grabbing her white leather handbag and makes her way towards the front door before opening it and leaving. After a few minutes of day-dreaming, thinking about all of my happy memories with my children, my attention is suddenly diverted when I hear a knock at the door.
Stacy
Who could that be?
I take another sip of my wine before setting the glass down on the table and getting up from the chair before heading towards the door, I take hold of the handle and push it down and opening it as I am greeted by a leggy short-haired blonde woman who looks to be in her early forties, dressed in a pair of bright red high heeled shoes, a pair of light blue denim jeans, a plain black tank top and a bright red long coat with a large black handbag hanging over her shoulder.
Stacy
Hi, may I help you?
Woman
Yes, my name is Marie...Marie Sullivan...
Stacy
Nice name, that’s actually my middle name...
Marie
I know Stacy, that’s because I asked Margaret and Alfred if they would give you my name as your middle name...
Who the Hell is this woman? How does she know my name, and how does she know my parents?
Stacy
I’m sorry Ms Sullivan, but how do you know who I am...and how do you know my parents?
Marie
Oh dear, they didn’t tell you did they?
Stacy
Tell me what?
Marie
May I come in? What I am about to tell you is going to be a huge shock so it’d be best if you were sat down for it...
Great. First my ex-husband practically takes my children away from me forever and now this Marie woman has some huge shocking news to tell me. I nod before stepping aside, letting her in before closing the door behind me. I motion for her to take a seat and she sits down before I make my way over to the kitchen area.
Stacy
Would you like a drink?
Marie
Oh, no thank you...I can’t stay long...
I nod before grabbing the bottle of wine and head over to the table Marie is sitting at and I sit down opposite her before refilling my glass of wine.
Stacy
Okay Ms Sullivan, I’m sitting down, what’s this huge shocking news?
Marie
Well Stacy, there’s no easy way to say this so I’m just going to come right out with it...I’m your biological mother...
I freeze suddenly, staring at this woman who’s just come into my life and told me she’s my mother. I shake my head, refusing to believe this news.
Stacy
No, you can’t be, I’m sorry but you’ve made a mistake...my parents were Alfred and Margaret Jones and I had a brother named Paul...
Marie
I’m not mistaken Stacy, Alfred and Margaret adopted you when you were only a few months old because I couldn’t take care of you. I was only eighteen when I had you, I was still in school and your father split when he first heard about me being pregnant with you...
Stacy
You’re lying...
Marie
No Stacy, it’s the truth, I had a friend working at the adoption agency and he managed to pull a few strings so I could meet Alfred and Margaret so I could make sure that you were going to a good home, and when I saw how kind and gentle they were and when I learned that they already had a two-year old son, I knew they would be the perfect family for my perfect little baby girl...
I begin to tear up, I refuse to believe this story, who the Hell does this woman think she is? I quickly stand to my feet, shaking my head furiously as I point towards the front door.
Stacy
Get out! I don’t know who the Hell you think you are, but you are not my mother! Get out! Now!
Marie stands to her feet and takes hold of my hand but I quickly pull away from her grasp.
Marie
Stacy please...
Stacy
I SAID GET OUT!!!
Marie begins to tear up as she begins to nod.
Marie
Okay then, if that's what you want, I’ll get out of your life...
She rummages through her handbag and pulls out a large brown envelope and places it down on the table.
Marie
There’s the proof that you are my daughter, I’ve spent years trying to find you so I could try and build a relationship with you. You have no idea what it’s like to have to watch your child be taken away from you...
Stacy
YES I FUCKING DO!
Tears begin pouring down my cheeks as the memories of what took place two days ago come flooding back to me.
Stacy
Two days ago, my ex-husband came to me with our two children and told me he was moving back to England and he visited me so I could say goodbye to them...I’ll probably never see them ever again!
Marie looks at me in shock.
Marie
I’m a grandmother?
Stacy
NO! YOU’RE NOT! YOU’RE NOT MY MOTHER, NOW GET OUT!!!
Marie quickly nods and begins swiftly making her way towards the front door as she wipes her tears away from her eyes. She opens the door and leaves, closing the door behind me as I slump down into the chair and begin crying uncontrollably. I rip open the envelope and look through the information in front of me and then I place my hand over my mouth in shock as I suddenly realize that Marie was telling the truth, she is my mother.
Stacy
Oh my God!
I cross my arms on the table and bury my head into them and after a few minutes of crying into my arms, the door opens and Tayla walks in. As soon as she notices me in the state I’m in, she quickly puts the food down on the kitchen counter and rushes over to me.
Tayla
Stace, what’s wrong?
I raise my head up and look at her, my eyes red raw from crying as my bottom lip quivers.
Stacy
A woman stopped by here a few minutes after you left claiming to be my biological mother...I refused to believe that it was true and I yelled at her and told her to leave...and then she left me this...
I pass her the documents from the envelope.
Stacy
She was telling the truth Tayla, my whole life I had no idea that I was adopted...
Tayla
Oh Stace, you poor thing...
Tayla wraps her arms around me and I wrap my arms around her and squeeze her tightly as I bury my face into her chest as the scene fades.
